This is a guest post by Laurel Whitworth at Aquinas and More. It’s drawing nearer, that time when we climb up to our dusty attics and seek out stacks of repurposed moving boxes marked “Christmas.” Out come the wreaths and garlands, the endless strings of tangled lights, the plastic lawn ornaments and light-up deer, and maybe even an occasional inflatable Grinch. If you’re lucky, among the tinsel and baubles, you’ll find a beautiful Advent calendar. Beyond the chocolate-a-day tradition, what... Read more

A member of my Catholic Working Mothers Facebook group shared the following today, and she gave consent for her words to be shared outside the group: This is for anyone who needs to hear this today: The concept of ONE or TWO people (the mother and father usually), being the sole nurturer, provider, caretaker, driver, supporter, etc. of their child is a completely new concept. For YEARS we had generational caretakers. For example, multiple generations in the home would take... Read more

Please note: This post contains affiliate links. You can read my full affiliate disclosure here. Thanksgiving 2018 was a resounding success. I spatchcocked our turkey, and it was AMAZING. Such crispy, flavorful skin and moist, tender meat! As an added bonus, it only took EIGHTY MINUTES for my almost-14-pound turkey to cook! I’m never roasting a turkey the traditional way again. This video was a tremendous help with the process. One piece of advice: be sure to invest in some good quality,... Read more

Please note: This post contains affiliate links. You can read my full affiliate disclosure here. I was so excited to receive a review copy of Heather Anderson Renshaw’s book “Death by Minivan.” Full disclosure: I received the review copy weeks ago. It might’ve even been in October; I’m can’t remember. I read the first chapter — which was great — and then real life beckoned and I had to put the book down because my kids sounded like they were trying... Read more

This is a different Thanksgiving for our family. All of our relatives and friends in the area either haven’t moved down for the winter yet (they’re known as “snowbirds” here in AZ), or they have other plans. Our family of eight is going it solo for Turkey Day this year. My husband suggested going out to eat for Thanksgiving, as we have in the past, but my preference is to cook at home as opposed to braving a crowded restaurant... Read more

I am fascinated by this profile of Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers. She’s the only congresswoman to give birth three times while in office. Prior to the birth of her third child, she was the only congresswoman to give birth twice while in office, and prior to that, she was the first congresswoman to give birth while in office in over a decade! Additionally, her oldest son, Cole, has Down Syndrome. Not surprisingly, McMorris Rodgers also gets asked pointed questions about how... Read more

Between Halloween, All Saint’s Day, my 38th birthday (November 3) and Election Day, I’m beat! Now Thanksgiving is just around the corner, which means that Advent is quickly approaching. I know it’s hard for busy working moms to come up with easy but meaningful Advent activities to do with their kids, so I’ve compiled a few ideas I’ve found while tooling around... Read more

Exciting book news! I submitted my official headshot to OSV earlier this week. I hired a fellow CWM in my city (she used to be my kids’ DRE), and did a photoshoot with her last weekend. I was pleased with the result! Thanks, Margaret Planeta Photography! Even more exciting, I received word from my publisher late this week that the publishing committee has finalized the title of my book! The tentative title was: The Catholic Working Mother: Balancing Faith, Work,... Read more

It’s been yet another nasty election season, and I’m tired. Tired of the sniping and the attack ads and the nastiness and the outright lying. One of my local elections has had me particularly — I don’t even know what the word is. Disturbed? Frustrated? The race is between Dr. Hiral Tipirneni and Debbie Lesko. Per our local news: Tipirneni is facing former state Sen. Debbie Lesko, R-Peoria, in the April 24 special election for Arizona’s 8th Congressional District. The... Read more

Mary Elizabeth Fabian is an online friend of mine. We met via a Facebook due date group when we were both pregnant with our youngest daughters (my Laura was born January 2017; her Claire was born February 2017). She’s a small business owner as well as a mom, a member of my Catholic Working Mothers Facebook group, and the Republican candidate seeking election to the Colorado House of Representatives to represent District 18. You can read all about her and... Read more
