Healer of My Soul: Insights and Hope to Overcome Sin

Healer of My Soul: Insights and Hope to Overcome Sin February 20, 2024

In a recent article, I highlighted one of my favorite bands (Waterdeep). For this article, allow me to highlight one of my favorite recording artists (Catholic or otherwise), John Michael Talbot (JMT). One of my favorite songs by JMT is Healer of My Soul; a song very appropriate for the season of Lent.

As Catholics enter the penitential season of Lent, a season where we reexamine our lives in the light of Jesus’ love and sacrifice for us, this song provides a perfect contemplative atmosphere for reflection and meditation. Christ longs to heal our souls but first we must admit our soul’s need healing. I hope and pray you allow Him to heal your soul.

Please click the link above, listen to the song, and prayerfully read the lyrics below.

Healer of My Soul (Song by John Michael Talbot)

Healer of my soul
Keep me at even
Keep me at morning
Keep me at noon
Healer of my soul

Keeper of my soul
On rough course faring
Help and safeguard my means this night
Keeper of my soul

I am tired, astray, and stumbling
Shield my soul from the snare of sin

Healer of my soul
Heal me at even
Heal me at morning
Heal me at noon
Healer of my soul

Keeper of My Soul

Many do not think of God a “keeper of souls.” I find comfort in the idea that God tends to and keeps my soul. The song acknowledges that we all travel along a “rough course” due to the darkness of temptation and sin. In the song, we request that God “help and safeguard” us as we travel. God, as the “keeper of our soul” comes to our aid.

Exhausted by Sin

Moreover, the most insightful verses in this song reflect how truly exhausting our struggle with sin is.

I am tired, astray, and stumbling
Shield my soul from the snare of sin

I don’t know about you, but I AM tired of going “astray and stumbling” and I desperately need God to “shield my soul from the snare of sin.” Does anyone else feel the exhaustion that sin needlessly places on our souls? As an aside, I love how JMT uses a somber Celtic violin to emphasize the weight of sin.

Healer of My Soul

As a sinner, I am in desperate need of healing. I often stray and stumble in the darkness of my own creation, my own personal night. Thank God for the season of Lent, where once again the Church invites me to consider my need for healing and He Who offers it.

Healer of my soul
Heal me at even
Heal me at morning
Heal me at noon
Healer of my soul

Therefore, may we all turn to Jesus for the healing our soul’s so desperately need.

Have a blessed and productive Lent.

He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed. 1 Peter 2:24

Thank you!
