As 2014 comes to an end I am thinking about my goals for the new year. These are my resolutions for 2015…   1) Spending more time at the temple Since I moved I’m actually closer to the temple but my mind is still stuck thinking of it as so far away. It feels like such an epic trek to get there. I want to make it a priority to get to the temple every weekend and maybe start volunteering... Read more

The second book in our book club series is Eat, Pray Love. Is it a Hindu book? Not exactly, but it is very relevant to the experiences of non-Indian Hindus. The author has a Hindu guru (whose identity has been rather easily found out by those familiar with the world of Indian gurus). Julia Roberts after playing the author in the movie, claimed to have become a Hindu. So I think it will be worthwhile to examine the experiences and... Read more

I find there’s kind of a funny effect from watching faith practices from religions that aren’t mine. I deepen my own practice! This has been happening for me through two TV shows that I’ve been really enjoying. The first is Little Mosque on the Prairie, a Canadian show that is now available on Hulu. (The first season is available for free). It’s about a small town mosque and it has a very light and fun look at Muslim experience in the... Read more

I think that as human beings we have an enormous fear of the unknown and a fear of the randomness of bad things happening to us. We have to believe that there’s a reason why something bad happened to someone because if they didn’t do anything to deserve it, it makes us feel horribly unsafe. I first noticed this a couple of years ago when there was a train accident in the town where I worked. Two teenage girls were... Read more

A comment came up on the blog last week suggesting that my choice of husband was racist. Why didn’t I marry a Hindu? This friend suggested that it was because white people like to marry other white people and we don’t consider people of other races our equals or worth considering for marriage. I do try really hard to call out any racism that I find hiding in my psyche but in this case I don’t think that’s a fair assessment... Read more

We are doing a scripture study together: reading along through some scriptures and discussing the passages. This is the fifth post on The Bhagavad Gita. From the Winthrop Sargeant translation of The Gita… 24. Thus Krishna was addressed by Arjuna, O Dhritarashtra, Having caused the chief chariot To stand in the middle between the two armies. 25. Before the eyes of Bhishma and Drona And all these rulers of the earth, Arjuna said: Behold these Kurus assembled. 26. Arjuna saw standing... Read more

Yes, missionaries in India use lying, trickery, deception, and bribes to make people Christian. That’s a fact. They target vulnerable people who need the promises they are making (whether true or not). But now the question I have is why are these people vulnerable? Why are we Hindus not taking care of their needs? By the time we’re complaining about the disgusting tactics of missionaries, it’s already too late. So what can we do to subvert their attempts at forced... Read more

I hope that you all know about the magazine Hinduism Today. It’s packed with great information and insightful articles and it’s the only publication of its kind. This is the only Hindu based magazine you can get regularly in America! Every issue inspires me and makes me think and consider new things. I wanted to make sure that you all know that it is available for free on the publisher’s website. All their books, magazines, and pamphlets are available to... Read more

When I posted about bumper stickers some people said they didn’t think most Hindus would show off their faith in that way because it’s not “cool” to be religious. It’s not something people want to show off. They pointed out that these days there’s a real emphasis on being intellectual and modern. Looking down on religion of all kinds is what’s “in.” I hadn’t thought about it like that but I can see their point. I suppose a lot of... Read more
