I wonder sometimes what it is that compels me to put my thoughts and feelings as I experience life up on the Internet for anyone to read. My blog is not a news blog, it’s not an advice blog, it’s not even a philosophy blog. I don’t know what the purpose of my musing is. I think it is just to connect with other people. At a fairly young age I discovered that I don’t communicate well in person. I... Read more

It’s strange for me to be so excited about the jewelry. I almost never wear any jewelry in my day to day life. I don’t even put in earrings except on rare occasions. So you’d never know it to look at my geeky self, but I LOVE over the top, ridiculous costume jewelry. Gaudy? Yes, please. That’s what I’m going for. I want to feel like a queen, nay, a goddess! The only piece of jewelry here that is “real”... Read more

Shaktism is a branch of Hinduism that focuses on the supreme power of the feminine energy. The highest form of God is a mother form in this system.  According to Wikipedia: Shaktism’s focus on the Divine Feminine does not imply a rejection of Masculine or Neuter divinity. However, both are deemed to be inactive in the absence of Shakti. As set out in the first line of Adi Shankara‘s renowned Shakta hymn,Saundaryalahari (c. 800 CE): “If Shiva is united with Shakti, he... Read more

Brad and I went to check out the Sathya Sai Baba group at the interfaith center on Saturday. There was a special event going on for Mother’s day with the teenage groups doing a presentation. We were a little late getting there (it was quite a busy weekend!), so we slipped in and got the second half of the boy’s presentation about recycling, reusing, and the protection of the environment. Definitely a cause near and dear to my heart! Then... Read more

Apparently I’ve attracted the attention of some Hindus who have gotten the impression that I’m somehow anti-Hindu. O.o I’m very confused about this entire situation. I’m now being told that I’m going to be written about and “exposed.” What about, I’m not sure. Apparently because I have not encouraged people to kill Muslims??? Maybe? My heart aches for my brothers and sisters suffering violence in this world. I am so sorry to know that anyone is hurting, whether Hindu or... Read more

Sometimes on my Facebook page I post quotes about Hinduism, particularly quotes from western people who are praising Hinduism. I think a lot of people enjoy seeing non-Hindus acknowledge Hinduism’s best qualities. Every so often though, someone will make the point that Indian Hindus shouldn’t need praise from the West to believe in Hinduism. For example this comment on a picture shared by Resurging Hinduism on FB: Ashwin Kumar: we Hindus are in a pathetic stage that some one from western country should... Read more

The comments on this post got way out of hand and seriously off topic! But it brought up an interesting question for me.  What should our response, as Hindus, be when we hear of injustices in the world? I have to preface this by saying that I have a very hard time trusting any report I hear through the media. There is no news source that doesn’t have a bias and it is impossible to share information without putting some... Read more

Many of you know that I lost my best friend to a car accident three years ago. I’m still in a bit of shock over it. One of the things that we did together was talk about weddings. We both loved them. We watched TLC’s A Wedding Story in our dorm common room every chance we got. She had an opinion on every dress. We promised each other that we would be bridesmaids at each other’s weddings. That was a... Read more

I can’t recall how or where I first heard of Sai Baba. I don’t know much at all about him or his teachings (yet). I’m going to do some research today so we can both learn about him. I know I have at least heard of him before. Seeing his picture on the website of the congregation I’m going to be checking out, I instantly recognized it because of his wild frizz of hair. Background Śri Sathya Sai Baba is... Read more

I’m all about planning ahead. I like to have a project to work on. My fiance says it’s in my astrological nature. So as I plan my wedding, I’m also definitely thinking about the step that comes next: having kids. We really want to start a family right away. As we start to prepare and think about bringing a child into our family, the biggest concern to me is having a Hindu community around us. I want other people in... Read more
