A favorite witchy practice is the crafting of loose, magickal herbal incense. Loose incense is one of the oldest magical technologies we have. I’ve previously posted about my techniques with an Ostara Incense recipe here. Long before candles in glass jars or modern spell kits, people burned resins, bark, flowers, and fragrant leaves to carry their prayers and intentions into the unseen world, up to their ancestors and deities as offerings, and as a means to shift their own consciousness. Just light a hookah charcoal puck, place it into a heat-safe incense censer, and sprinkle your blend on the coal a teaspoon at time. Viola! Magick!
In my book Elemental Witchcraft: A Guide to Living a Magickal Life Through the Elements, and in the online course I teach at HeronMichelle.com, I share the methods I use for working with plant allies in this way—choosing ingredients according to their magical correspondences, blending them in intentional proportions, and aligning the work with the tides of time.
The five elemental blends I teach correspond to the Paths of Truth, Love, Power, Sovereignty, and Completion—Air, Water, Fire, and Earth—with a fifth temple blend devoted to Spirit. These align our fivefold body with the five essences that create nature, as represented by the pentagram.
Recently I prepared fresh batches of these incenses by hand, and they are now available at The Sojourner under new labels that better reflect their magical purpose and full ingredient lists. If you’d like to purchase some for yourself, they can be found at thesojo.com.

Auspicious Timing
When witches speak of making something at an auspicious time, we mean that the work is aligned with the natural rhythms of the cosmos. Just as farmers plant according to the seasons, magical herbalists often blend or consecrate their materials when the planetary and elemental energies most closely match the intention of the work.
For example:
Water blends are ideally prepared on Monday, the day of the Moon, or when the Moon moves through a water sign such as Cancer, Scorpio, or Pisces.
Air blends favor Wednesday, the day of Mercury, Thursday, the day of Jupiter, or periods when the Moon travels through Gemini, Libra, or Aquarius.
Fire blends align naturally with Sunday or Tuesday, days of the Sun and Mars, or when the Moon is in Aries, Leo, or Sagittarius.
Earth blends come into their strength on Friday or Saturday, the days of Venus and Saturn, or when the Moon moves through Taurus, Virgo, or Capricorn.
Working this way does not change the herbs themselves—the plants are already alive with their own spirit and virtue. What it does is place the act of blending the new creation, like the birth of a new babe, into harmony with the greater currents of nature. That new baby blend then has it’s own natal chart that is favorable to the need, and the work becomes a small collaboration between human intention and cosmic timing.

The Value of Blending Your Own Incense
Whenever possible, I always encourage people to try blending their own incense.
Working directly with the herbs—touching the resins, crushing leaves in your mortar and pestle, breathing in the fragrance as the ingredients as they come together—builds a relationship with the spirit within the plants that no purchased blend can fully replicate. Your intention, attention, and energy become part of the mixture.
At the same time, not everyone enjoys the process or has access to a wide range of ingredients. In those cases, I think it matters from whom you purchase magical materials. Buying blends prepared by an actual practicing witch—someone whose work you know and trust—means the incense has been made with care, knowledge, and genuine spiritual intention rather than simply manufactured as a novelty product.
Many of the plants in my own blends are grown or gathered from the backyard garden surrounding my sacred circle. Others are sourced through suppliers who share our commitment at The Sojourner to ethical and sustainable cultivation. That includes careful attention to materials such as sandalwood and certain resins, which have faced pressure from over-harvesting in recent years.
Working with plants responsibly is part of our covenant with the Earth.

Fresh batches of these elemental incenses are now available through my shop The Sojourner at thesojo.com, packaged in half-ounce compostable pouches with full ingredient labels. And, I now have printed a special gift that I include with every in-store and on-line purchase of our magickal materials! This hand-drawn symbol key postcard (images above) to aid understanding of the links between element, planet, and magickal intentions.
Whether you choose to blend your own or work with one prepared by a trusted hand, incense remains one of the simplest ways to bring the living powers of the plants into your magical practice. The smoke rises, the fragrance spreads, and the old conversation between humans, herbs, and the unseen world continues.
