Back to back secular feast days Frank? What gives? Not what, but who. I’ve been reading the Catechism, see, and this is what the Church says, (more…) Read more

Now that the presidential election is over, some of you may be feeling listless after the loss in the “biggest election of all time.” My advice? Don’t be. Depending on where you stand politically, think about how you reacted to last nights election news. Did you get caught up in the election cycle so much that you lost sight of the Kingdom of Heaven? A slippery slope lies between being a concerned citizen and morphing into a partisan political hack... Read more

All I’m sure of so far is that the Healthcare Flexible Spending Account level that you could set aside tax-free was slashed from $5,000 to only $2,500, effective January 2013. That’s one way taxes can be raised for everyone without income taxes rates being changed. For the rest of the muddle, for it will be a battleground, the folks over at H&R Block have a helpful little graphic. Take a gander at it over a beer or your other favorite... Read more

There will be much post-election chatter to keep us occupied for days, if not weeks. In the coming hours, much ink will be spilled on the subject and your humble blogger may even indulge in adding to the straw pile of “what it all means” recaps of the election. You may have seen it too. No, it wasn’t Bob Roberts, nor was it The Manchurian Candidate. The one I’m thinking about even starred Martin Sheen, long before he even knew he would be President in the television series The West Wing. Everybody loved President Josiah “Jed” Bartlet back in the day, didn’t we? Jed was even a Noble laureate, as I recall. Anyway, I said “scariest” so in this movie, see, Sheen was a supporting actor. The star was... Read more

Alison Kear, from out of Anchorage, Alaska way, sent me a note about an opportunity for a corporal work of mercy. You all know I have been passionate about Covenant House, Alaska (CHA) for many years. Kids need to feel valued, the need for our services is real, and I am passionate about what we represent to kids who are cold, alone and feel no one cares. I am humbled to represent to them that people do care. I can... Read more

You may remember my friend named Wu Li, SJ.  I introduced him to you in a post a few years back.Wu died as a Jesuit priest in Macau in 1718. There is something about departed Catholics and me. I’m like Haley Joel Osment in The Sixth Sense, or something. Except I don’t really see dead people. But I make friends with them so maybe they might be saints. (more…) Read more

In the combox this morning on the post on the new educational website launched by the USSCB, a reader notes that religious freedom is a two way street. The concern here is America not only as a place of freedom OF religion, but also freedom FROM religion. Both must be honored in a true democracy. I replied with a few thoughts, noting that yes it is a two-way street, and let’s make sure it isn’t a one way street to... Read more
