I was blessed to visit where the Annunciation took place. I figured that I should share some of the photographs of the grotto, and cave-like home, of the Theotokos on this day on which we celebrate this Solemnity. Over this site is built the Basilica of the Annunciation in the pretty crowded (these days) town of Nazareth. (more…) Read more

Now here’s something you don’t see everyday. Cardinal O’Brien joins an elite circle of folks founded when Cesare Borgia was the first person to ever resign from the cardinalate (17 August, 1498). The Catholic Herald has the story. (more…) Read more

צדיק is the Hebrew word for “righteous,” and it is an adjective that the Gospel of Matthew uses  to describe the foster father of Jesus (though he used the Greek word, δίκαιος). But it means righteous on the level of say a Moses or  an Elijah. In other words, not just a good man, but a really, really, high level, holy man, like those paragons of holiness. Anglicized, the word is rendered as saddiq or tzadik. Do you recall the... Read more

Finally. We have a scandal that we can literally call “Watergate” without blinking an eye. Except it appears to be over about that quickly. What? You missed the news that the Cathedral in San Francisco installed exterior sprinklers for the sole purpose of wrecking the nights of homeless folks trying to catch some zzz’s in the corners of the building? Good thing the Fourth Estate was on the ball, and floated the ballon on this travesty. (more…) Read more

Remember that time when Chesterton showed up in Breitbart? This is even better than that.  Even the subtitle of the piece says, “this author loves Chesterton.” The case for canonizing G. K. Chesterton, the bombastic man of letters and paradoxical militant for God See? More from James Parker’s article, A Most Unlikely Saint, (more…) Read more

I’ve been reading Giovanni Papini’s Life of Christ some more. My Chinese mentor, John C.H. Wu, introduced this book, and author, to me. You’ve probably never heard of Papini (I sure hadn’t!) but he was a well known author back in the early 20th Century. Come to think of it, that was ’round about the same time G.K. Chesterton was pumping out tons of great stuff from his pen/typewriter too. (more…) Read more

Are 100,000 Americans willing to say we should be doing more to save the religious minorities from the death dealers of ISIS? I think the answer to that question is Yes. I mean considering that the population of the United States is 319 million these days. “Yeah, Frank, but a bunch of those people are sucking on pacifiers, wearing diapers, and learning their multiplication tables.” Good point, dear reader. How about if we just count the folks between the ages... Read more

I am saddened to hear that Leonard Nimoy has passed away. May he rest in peace and rise again on the Last Day. Here is a clip of the story behind his improvisation of the Vulcan greeting “Live long, and prosper.”  It has something to do with one of my favorite Hebrew letters, ש, and a memorable event from his childhood. Roll clip! (more…) Read more
