"Why Did Jesus die?" my Alpha talk

"Why Did Jesus die?" my Alpha talk March 21, 2005

This is the rough outline I used for last thursday’s Alpha talk on “why did jesus die?” Just to make clear to anyone who thinks I am into the penal substitutionary view as an exclusive explanation of the cross, I have no problem with using the outline Alpha proposed (which is almost identical to this one)

Why did Jesus Die?
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son that whoever believes in him will not perish but have everlasting life John 3:16

For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God Romans 3:23
Results of sin
– denial
-Pollution of sin
For from within, out of men’s hearts, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly Mark 7:21-23
-Penalty for sin
For the wages of sin is death Romans 6:23
-Partition of sin
But your iniquities have separated you from your God Isaiah 59:2

The Solution
He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness 1 Peter 2:24
Agony of the Cross- emotional more than physical
We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way;
and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all Isaiah 53:6
My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
All who see me mock me
I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint
They have pierced my hands and my feet
They divide my garments among them and cast lots for my clothing
Psalm 22:1,7,14,16,18

The Results of Jesus death
