What Keeps Me Going This Week: 2 Thessalonians 2:16-17

When life is tough — or even when it’s not — I’ve found comfort in the Bible. My favorite parts change from month to month, week to week, or even day to day.  Honestly, I should read it more than I do, because I’ve also found that life is better when I hang on to its promises and truth.

Here’s the verse that’s speaking to me right now, 2 Thessalonians 2:16-17.

May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and by his grace gave us eternal encouragement and good hope, encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good deed and word.

This is a meaningful verse, because God has encouraged me so much today! I need to remember the source of all lasting encouragement.

This week, what verses are meaningful to you?

  • Daniel

So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. Isaiah 41:10

    • K

      Love this verse. Also:
      Romans 12
17Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everybody. 18If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. 19Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord. 20On the contrary:
      “If your enemy is hungry, feed him;
if he is thirsty, give him something to drink.
In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.”
21Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

As a 22 year old girl who just 3 weeks ago started M work in China…

    Acts 20:24

“But yI do not account my life of any value nor as precious to myself, if only zI may finish my course and athe ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to dthe gospel of ethe grace of God.”

    • Sharon

Thank you Julie for your service to the people and Jesus Christ!!

  • Diane Knuth

You go girl. Keep reading the promises of God in the Bible. It will strengthen you and help you. Jesus is an awesome Lord and Savior. Yes?

    • Gilly

Only if your heterosexual and recently became white. Crap wait..that’s Mormonism…scratch the white part but yes Jesus is an awesome Lord and Savior to his chosen (and often white), heterosexual people.

      • Mariah

Awe…you poor thing…you get bullied all the time!! Take a look in the mirror. You have to earn respect, not just demand it on a silver platter. Respect others and others will respect you.

        • Gilly

I don’t crave respect Mariah. And no I have not been bullied all the time. You are just mad because people are starting to see through religion and conservatism. But let me say this…I take your words at face value because I’m sure they were meant in a sincere “love they neighbory” kind of way.

      • TBR

Silly Gilly! Jesus was, in all likelihood, an olive skinned man, not white.

        • Gilly

Where did I say in my post that Jesus was white TBR? Stop projecting so much.

  • Joseph

no weapon forged against you will prevail, and you will refute every tongue that accuses you.
This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and this is their vindication from me,” – Isaiah 54:17

I speak this over myself before I head out.

    • Gilly

Maybe this is why Christians feel so persecuted all the time. Your leaving your house looking for a fight!

      • Mariah

Maybe if you read the Bible, you will realize what it is saying!! Think before you speak!!

    Romans 8:38-39
For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons,[a] neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Bristol honey, you are a terrific mom and a great kid! Your Mom and Dad raised all of you perfectly, and you are a wonderful family. I can’t say how sorry I am that your mom was not our VP. Your family is what Americana is all about. Much love, and wishes for success to you and yours. Stay strong kiddo!

  • Georgia

    Lovely, simply lovely.

  • Mariah

May God Bless You and Your Family, Bristol!!! What got me through this week of being bullied and hated on both at school and on the blogs was John 3:16!! Thank you for sharing this verse!!! God Bless!!!~Mariah~

    • Kay

Mariah, you stay strong. Bullying is a weakness on the a part of the bully, not you. School is only temporary and years down the road, the bully may feel bad about how he treated you, but if you remain steadfast in the way you act, you won’t have to feel bad about how you treated the bully.

      • Mariah

Thank you so much!!!! May God bless you!!!!

  • Shannon

Thank you for posting this. My family and I lost our uncle (brother/husband/father/friend) and its been tough, as he was too young and it was very unexpected, and I’ve found myself very angry. As I attend his wake today and funeral tomorrow, I will think of this verse and be hopeful and encouraging in consoling my aunt and her four children, as my uncle and God would want us to be.

    • Mariah

Shannon, hang in there!!! My grandpa recently past, and it is still painful, but there is only one way out: Foward!!! You will experince the five stages of greif. All five will be at different times and days, and at their own pase. May God Help You through You Time In Need!! I Will Pray for You!!
      1. Denial
      2. Anger
      3. Bargining
      4. Depression
      And finally 5. Acceptance
