Great Idea: Dolls for Downs

This is fantastic. A mom in Pennsylvania, Connie Feda, makes some lovely and loving dolls for kids with Downs Syndrome. Here’s the story about the inspiration that came from her daughter from Today:

Born with Down syndrome, Hannah wanted a toy companion with almond-shaped eyes like hers and a zipper-like scar on her chest, just like the one she has after an operation to mend three holes in her heart.

“There’s no doll that looks like me and none of them have surgery,” she complained to her mother.

So Connie Feda searched for a doll with Down syndrome features, only to discover she didn’t like what she found.

“I think Hannah is a beautiful little thing,” Feda, a mother of six, told TODAY Moms.

“I see a sparkle in her eye and I see a lot of imp, and I didn’t see that in those dolls. I saw a very detailed, stereotypical perhaps, medical diagnosis stamped in plastic.”

A business idea was born: why not create a whole new set of dolls for kids just like Hannah?

These dolls are precious friends for precious children. And the sweetest thing? They are even available with the scar from the heart surgery that so many DS kids need to have.  Check out the whole story here.

The trolls are begging me to come back.

MR is right, it is tasteless to choose this particular thread to bash Bristol’s mom.

otlset, right on! The trolls are always hurt by the truth.

“Many of them do news shows every day; they pursue stories and research topics. They attend press conferences and chase down Congressmen; they make decisions on source credibility. I don’t think it’s easy work, and if you make a mistake, it’s very public. You may not like what they do, and some do it better than others, but most of them do work hard at it.” ROFLOL!

    • MiddleRoader

Glad you’re back, Melory, and glad I made you laugh, although that wasn’t my intent. Up until a few months ago, Sarah Palin was one of the media pols she is now trashing (although she wasn’t on the DC circuit.) At least Carlson and Brokaw took the time to write an article or be interviewed to explain their views. They didn’t resort to name-calling on Twitter, without any explanation of why she changed her views. My remarks were directed at Palin, but I think they also apply to a large section of our society. Look up almost any news story and scroll down to the comments. There’s very little reasonable debate and critical thinking. (Supposedly school curricula are going to focus more on those things in the future-I hope that’s true but we’ll see.) BTW, one reason I like this blog is that I think there is more rational discussion of issues than on many others.

    • Ishamael

What would you know about taste Melory? I guess you’re still in a bad mood over the election…time to move on honey.

  • otlset

Oh yeah, kudos to Connie Feda for her sympathetic and positive idea. Here she discovered a new unfilled niche in doll types, and I hope it works out well for her. Heh, now watch Trig get a ton of them for Christmas!

  • michael

Trig appriciates everyone included I am sure, a doll for all types of people to better relate with the individual. But he’ll be happier on a snowmachine likely.

“Don’t you tell me what to do, I’ll do what I want! I should never have come on this trip with you, I should have taken an airplane… and him! He shouldn’t even have a license to drive an automobile! He should be BEHIND BARS!”

    • MiddleRoader

I agree with the first part of your comment. These dolls aren’t cheap, so I’d make sure your child really likes playing with dolls before you buy one. Children, even girls, don’t seem to enjoy playing with dolls as much as they did “back in my day”. I guess there’s too much competition from videos, computers, etc. And BTW, the dolls aren’t just for kids with disabilities; they can be useful to teach all children about diversity and disabilities (and abilities).
The last part of your comment- Maybe it’s me, but I have no idea what you’re talking about.

  • melory

Liberals still all wee-weed up over a tweet from “irrellevant” Sarah Palin.

If only liberals could get this worked up over the butchering of infants by PP and their Democrat abortion doctor from Philidelphia. Time we start talking about the Democrat’s war on babies.

Regarding her tweet: Brevity is the soul of wit. Mission accomplished for Sarah. The constant partying at the White House, this time joined by the state-owned media, while Rome is burning, finally someone said what everyone was thinking. Thank you Governor Palin!

With her boldness she reminded liberal reporter Margaret Carlson what journalism is all about and inspired her to speak out about something that has clearly bothered her (Carlson) for a long time. I am sure Carlson is taking a lot of heat for it from liberals, free thinking is not encouraged in lefty “journalism”.

“My remarks were directed at Palin, but I think they also apply to a large section of our society.”
Oh, spare me your outrage! (still love you, smile). Your remarks apply to the President of the United States, Barack Obama.

Were you outraged when he used profanity to describe Romney in a Rolling Stones article (called him a “bulls…er”); when he told ABC he was looking to see “whose ass to kick” (re oil spill); and when he called Kanay West a jackass. Joe Biden used the f-word to express his joy with Obama-care. I remember, and I just read again remarks from liberals who thought Obama was so cute when he used profanity, at the time a Huffpuff reporter even wrote an article about it and wished the president would do that more, it made him look cool or something.

“Look up almost any news story and scroll down to the comments. There’s very little reasonable debate and critical thinking.
It is because liberals are allowed to roam freely. Look what they are trying to do to Bristol’s blog. (not talking about you MR, btw, I don’t consider you a troll.)

Our centers of education have become centers of indoctrination, unfortunately. In NY I heard they are teaching young girls and boys (11 – 14 years old) to explore homosexual and lesbian lifestyles. Is that why we send out children to school? Next time, if I have time, I will provide this and more evidence to prove that they are not interest in teaching critical thinking, etc.

“BTW, one reason I like this blog is that I think there is more rational discussion of issues than on many others.” You will find this to be true on most conservative blogs.

    • melory

      should be “Philadelphia”

      meant to say “state-run media”

    • melory

“There’s very little reasonable debate and critical thinking. (Supposedly school curricula are going to focus more on those things in the future-I hope that’s true but we’ll see.)” When they are done indoctrinating, perhaps they’ll get around doing the job they are paid for.

Unemployment dropped to a 4 year low today of 7.5 percent and Rhode Island becomes the 10th state to legalize gay marriage. :) Happy Friday Melory!

      • melory

Unemployment still higher than the Bush years, yet liberals told us that it was the end of the world then. Hypocrites! During Bush years we had good employment figures, until Dems took congress in 2006, everything went downhill from there.

Newborn babies are being murdered because of liberal policies as we speak, so I fully understand your smiley happy face.

Happy Friday to you too, Ishamael, and may the Lord have mercy on you and open your eyes and get you off the Democrat plantation, for your own sake.

        • Ishamael

Yes Bush certainly enjoyed the economic benefits of the Clinton years and a surplus (which he quickly squandered).

You got me there…nothing liberals like more than waking up to new born babies being murdered….although sometimes I like to have a cup of coffee first.

Thanks for your prayers and may you stumble into a library and fall into a pile of science books..and actually read them.

          • Ishamael

Stocks rallied to new highs today giving the Dow Industrials a taste of 15,000 and pushing the S&P 500 past 1600.

Of course I know how frustrating this is for conservatives like Melory who (like the good patriotic Americans they claim to be) only want bad news for this country.

          • melory

You want to talk science, LOL! Where do you want to start? Global warming, the beginning of human life? Just say the word, and we can have the conversation, you lover of snake-oil science!

I always LOL at liberals who pretend to love reading, critical thinking, science, yet the country is still waiting with bated breath to see any evidence of that!

“You got me there…nothing liberals like more than waking up to new born babies being murdered….although sometimes I like to have a cup of coffee first.” I wish you were being sarcastic, but sadly you are not. May the Lord have mercy on you. Soulless liberal, do you even know how offensive and disgusting your remark is – what kind of person joke about something so cruel as the murder of babies? I guess in liberal world, that kind of remark is acceptable and witty?

I hate to burst your bubble about that “surplus” Clinton left us with! But a girl’s got to do what a girl’s got to do!

          • melory

I thought liberals love to do research, sigh….

“While not defending the increase of the federal debt under President Bush, it’s curious to see Clinton’s record promoted as having generated a surplus. It never happened. There was never a surplus and the facts support that position. In fact, far from a $360 billion reduction in the national debt in FY1998-FY2000, there was an increase of $281 billion.

Verifying this is as simple as accessing the U.S. Treasury”

How about we start with the internet where we are having this silly argument. Was that created by god or scientists? I’m sorry you CHOOSE to believe in such nonsense as a god and a book full of rules (which most Christians refuse to follow)…but that’s your problem not mine.

“Soulless liberal” Nice! I like it. Beats a brain-dead, arrogant, hypocrite any day of the week.

And exactly how did you “bust my bubble”? You offered no argument…and of course no facts supporting your argument although thats pretty much a given with you.

Take your time Mel…there’s a lot of big words in the article.

          • Ishamael

And while you’re reading I will be sitting at a Planned Parenthood sipping a frappe and waiting for the festivities to commence! Happy Friday!!!!

          • Ishamael

But don’t feel bad. If have any investments you did really well today thanks to PRESIDENT OBAMA! HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA H A HA HA HA HA HA HA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

          • otlset

Meanwhile 9.5 million people have so far given up and dropped out of the work force since Obama took office (thus not counted in the unemployment numbers), as the workforce participation rate falls to a 34 year low of 63.3%. All these damn figures get ‘adjusted’ later on so who really knows?

Those peeps just be chillin’ I s’pose, getting by somehow, watching Bernanke on the news enriching the Wall Street bubble, stimulating investment in stocks by cranking out millions more dollars out of thin air, the very same Wall Street one-percenter fatcats Obama railed against to get elected! Oh he’s a clever one, that Obama, heh.

          • melory

Epic meltdown!!! That is what the truth does to liberals!

Btw, it is junk science that conservatives have a problem with.
Junk science is faulty scientific data and analysis used to advance special interests and hidden agendas. My invitation still stands, don’t run away now!

That fact-check.org? The one that receives funding from liberal Annenberg foundation? They would tell you the truth about Clinton, yeah right! How ’bout just accessing the US Treasury, afraid of finding the truth?

          • otlset

I love junk science myself. Junk science says continued modest rises in atmospheric CO2 concentrations will lead to the globe getting gradually warmer, so warm it will snow in May!

        • MiddleRoader

But, Melory, you criticize the “liberal” factcheck.org, but your info comes from a conservative site! I’m not an economist ( I have enough trouble balancing my checking account!) and honestly, the article and some posts I saw refuting it are over my head. But I have to wonder, if it’s true that Clinton did not leave office with a surplus, why in all this time since he left office, haven’t more people reported on this? Yes, you can say the mainstream media buried it. But what about Fox News and other conservative outlets? Although some are pointing to Steiner’s article (and BTW, some, such as pjmedia, are calling him an economist although on his own website, he says he’s not), most are not denying the surplus; they are claiming it was caused more by things like the housing bubble, ROTH IRA conversions, etc. than his economic policy. (and there is probably some truth to that.) My point is that statistics can be used and manipulated to “prove” almost anything.

          • TrueBlue

Melory links only to blogs (as subjective as you can get — not a modicum of objectivity) and copy and pastes some text, as well. I admire your patience as you attempt a rational exchange with her.

          • melory

MR, that is why I said to access the US Treasury, and not my conservative source. I have always known the truth behind the “surplus”, people are talking about it all the time, but understandably liberals may never have heard of it, because they get their info from liberal sources.

          • melory

Trueblue, stop whining and investigate the information I provide with an objective mind. If you do that you will be able to discuss facts with me, instead of whining because you can’t stand the truth. You just dismiss it because it comes from a conservative, and you want to talk about objectivity. It is easy to verify information, start doing that so you can bring something worthwhile to the discussion, instead of just making snide remarks about Sarah and her supporters, and whining about conservatives.

            Learn from MR.

          • melory

MR, as I said on Friday, if I do not respond to you immediately, just know I will get back to you sooner or later, I do not have as much free time as I used to.

            A beautiful Sunday to you.

  • otlset

I’m still waiting to see why Obama was so anxious to get going to his *election fundraiser in Las Vegas* the next day after his administration’s ineptness and outright cruel indifference via Hillary Clinton’s State Department in turning down numerous requests for security leading to the Benghazi debacle that killed the Ambassador and three others there (“At this point, what difference does it make?” — Hillary Clinton. “A bump in the road.” — Obama). And what was he doing that evening he was supposed to be ‘monitoring’ the situation? Did he give the ‘stand-down’ order to prevent help? And why the lamestream media and administration continues to sweep all this under the rug to this day (“Benghazi happened a long time ago” — White House propagandist Jay Carney, yesterday). Just disgusting, the state of this now-infamous government/media ‘industrial complex’ (state-run media, on the down-low of course, wink wink) that conspires to brainwash the American people. Well, many of us will continue to RESIST, because we’re not stupid, and we hate being lied to, especially by our own government.

And let’s not even mention the deadly “Fast and Furious” gun-running operation spearheaded by Eric Holder’s racist Justice Department, also swept under the rug.

  • melory

    “why she changed her mind?”

When she attended the after party in 2011, it was before news came out about the mass murder of newborn babies in Gorsnell’s clinic, with body parts of the babies being kept in jars in the doctors office as souvenirs (heck liberals, what will it take to wake you up!!!), before the media ignored that most important and saddest story perhaps in the history of America, and before Obama with a straight face, went ahead and invoked God to bless the people responsible for the murder of these innocent, newborn babies.

Imagine Hitler having a feast with his compliant media while Jews were being murdered in his camps.

Can you now understand her/our outrage, MR?

PS: Those who said she was bitter for not being invited, you are so silly. She is not currently a member of the media – of course she did not expect to be invited. When Greta invited her, Sarah was working for Fox.

  • melory

And no, I did not compare Obama to Hitler. The same libs who have been comparing Bush to Hitler and called him the anti-Christ for the the past 12 years, will now feign outrage over something I have not said.

MR, please do not think I am ignoring you if I do not respond immediately, I will get back to you eventually, should you wish to continue our conversation.

    Till next time.

  • melory
  • melory

To the conservatives that will click on the above link, if you can ignore the first few paragraphs where the liberal whined about the fact that they can’t kill babies “safely” anymore, you will find that the rest of the article is actually good. It can be helpful to conservatives and liberals in the debate about the 2nd amendment.

  • MiddleRoader

Mel and otlset, you may be surprised that I agree with some of your points. I admit that I and many liberals are a bit obsessed with Sarah Palin, (even as we call her “irrelevant”), and frankly, I’m not sure why. There’s no arguing that she is a charismatic figure, and has a huge following. However, I was not “outraged” at Sarah’s tweet nor her language; I just thought it sounded bitter and needed further explanation. For the record, I thought Obama was pandering to the (younger?) hipper Rolling Stone audience when he called Romney a BS-er, and I thought that was in poor taste also. (although I can’t argue with the Kanye West insult- Kanye deserved that one!)
I also agree that the lesson on homosexuality that you referenced was over the line. However, what the article failed to mention is that a meeting was held (after the fact) to address parents’ concerns, and that future workshops “may require more notification to parents”. The workshop apparently also included ways to say no to unwanted sexual advances (a good thing for an 8th grader to know). This is why there are school boards and PTAs,and concerned involved parents. However, IMO, it’s not really a national story; it’s more of a local one.
I also think the Gosnell trial should have been covered more (and the Jodie Arias trial less..). I hope he is found guilty.
But I completely disagree with you that there’s more rational argument on conservative blogs. I snoop on lots of blogs on both sides, and while liberals might be a tad freer with the four-letter words, the name-calling and hateful comments and lies seem equal to me.

    • melory

MR, thank you for your respectful response. On some issues we agree to disagree.

You are a person of integrity, and I respect that a lot. I wish liberals who visit this blog will learn from you.

      Take care

      • Ishamael

Respect? Sounds like you need to practice what you preach Mel.

        • melory

Troll, learn from MR, earn my respect!

          • Ishamael

I didn’t ask for your respect. I simply pointed out your hypocrisy.

        • melory

The irony of a liberal “pointing out” hypocrisy! ROFLOL!

You and your fellow trolls come here and disrespect Sarah and her family every opportunity you get, and you want to talk about respect?

    • melory

It is leftist indoctrination, with tax payer money, period. If they want to do that after school hours, and parents agree to it, then it may be ok. As someone else pointed out, if the school taught homosexual and lesbian teenagers to experiment with dating the opposite sex, can you imagine the outrage that would cause?!

Remember the other article I posted where the students had an assignment where they had to “prove their Nazi loyalty”. http://mikesright.wordpress.com/2013/04/13/high-school-assignment-argue-that-jews-are-evil-prove-nazi-loyalty/
