Grace Unplugged: Creating Art out of Personal Pain.

One of the questions I get as a writer is: where do I get my ideas? I find it a difficult question to answer, because some of my stories are grounded in deep personal pain that I have no wish to discuss with the wider world. Usually, I give some lame answer about “not really knowing.”A few weeks ago, I went to the press junket for Grace Unplugged. One of my fellow journalists asked, “Was Grace Unplugged inspired by a real story?” A very natural question, and one I assumed would be answered wi … [Read more...]

Cross-Country Romances Do Sometimes Work

Billy Beane

“How can you not be romantic about baseball?” Truer words were never spoken by Oakland Athletics’ GM Billy Beane...or at least, by Brad Pitt playing Billy Beane in 2011’s Moneyball. Here we sit, two weeks away from the end of another glorious baseball regular season, and for the second straight year, my dear Phillies will enjoy the postseason from the same vantage point that I will...the living room couch. After years of bloated contracts, huge trades that decimated the farm system, and of cour … [Read more...]

“Ripping Callouses off People’s Hearts”: Interview with Indie Music Artist Jennifer Daniels

(Every time I listen to Jennifer Daniels, I'm transported to my college days. Covenant College is a converted 1920's hotel and grounds (yeah, its as cool as it sounds), so it had a lot of neat little secrets around every corner. Tucker Hall, if I remember right, was old caretaker cottage converted into a coffee house, the Stoplight Cafe. Jenn (also a student at the time) often sang on cool fall nights and transported us to other worlds. That's what her voice and lyrics do. One moment, they can … [Read more...]

3 To Go — Geek Goes Rogue Reviews Breaking Bad: “Ozymandias”

BreakingBad OzySkyler

From Geek Goes Rogue TV Editor Zach W. Lorton, whose wife is on her way home from being out of town, which means he doesn't have to wait a whole day while the internet explodes to write this review...So, at the end of last week's episode of Breaking Bad, we saw Walt get arrested, Jesse who orchestrated it, Hank read the Miranda Rights to Heisenberg, and a shootout take place that was cut off by the ending credits.  Grrr.  Tonight, we fly into an episode that I've been looking forward to si … [Read more...]

Can the Christian Movie Grace Unplugged Save Miley Cyrus?

Two weeks ago, I attended the Grace Unplugged press junket in Hollywood. The night before I left, Miley Cyrus decided to cause a bit of a stir (you may have heard about it) by backing her rear end into Robin Thicke at the MTV VMA's (couldn't it have been someone who DOESN'T look like a future Las Vegas lounge singer?). As might be expected, the whole world reacted, and my social media exploded. Evangelical Christians, in online media, started to jump on the bandwagon by slinging phrases like … [Read more...]

Passage from my upcoming novel, 3 Gates of the Dead…

My novel, 3 Gates of the Dead, drops in bookstores everywhere a month from now on October 15th. Here is passage from the book....“Edna sometimes has dreams, only thing I know what to call them. Anyway, she had a dream that she was walking in this field, and she saw a little boy walking barefoot in the snow.”He reached down to touch a print. “She called out to him and asked what he was doing there.” His voiced cracked again. “The boy turned, and Edna saw his face. She knew hi … [Read more...]

Faith-Based Films: As Bad as Christian Music?

From Geek Goes Rogue TV Editor Zach W. Lorton, who enjoys the oatmeal cookies his wife bakes, but has a hard time keeping them down when discussing this subject...Some news was made very recently about a Christian film company who created a film that was given an R rating from the MPAA.  Peter T. Chattaway wrote an article in his Patheos blog Film Chat about My Son, the film in question (you should check out the article).  In it, he visits the idea that the film may have been given the rating … [Read more...]

Lorton, who just saw The World's End and really wants a pint...Get your bug bombing tents out and practice your best "Am I under arrest" delivery, because it's time once again to travel back into the world of chemistry teacher turned drug emperor Walter White and his happy band of miscreants, of which none are truly happy.  It's time to break bread over Breaking Bad, and I am more than willing to help you through the rough waters of the final episodes by … [Read more...]
