Women at the Wall

From Religion and Ethics Newsweekly:

There were protests in Israel and elsewhere this week in support of a Jewish woman arrested for leading a group of women in prayers at Jerusalem’s Western Wall. Anat Hoffman, from the group Women of the Wall, was arrested for “disturbing public order.” Israeli policy bans women from reading from a Torah scroll at the Wall and from wearing prayer shawls reserved for men. There are also segregated sections for men and women. Other members of Hoffman’s group have also been arrested in recent months on similar charges.

Sometimes, it might seem as if we have no forward, hopeful motion, but then, I remember Mary…and Mary, Martha, Mary, and Junia, Phoebe, Priscilla, Euodia, Syntyche… My heart aches for women seeking God within communities which continually try to circumscribe their access. I have been among them. May God break through men’s barriers, &/or other women’s barriers, to wherever the seeking women are!

Amen, Ann. We’ll believe with you.
Stuff like this makes one wonder why believing that tax payers should not have to pay for contraception or abortion-on-demand is a “War On Women.”
