Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2013

WHAT: On Thursday, a coalition of mainstream Christians and progressive advocates will hold a media conference at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. to take back the mantle of religion from anti-LGBT extremists. They will offer a different, more enlightened vision for the future of America – one where everyone is treated with dignity and respect. The media event will take place one day prior to the annual Values Voter Summit, the annual conference that is organized by America’s most virulent hate groups and anti-LGBT activists.

The Values Voter Summit’s featured speakers include individuals who send the message that LGBT people are unworthy, morally and spiritually broken, and a danger to society. This message literally drives many LGBT teens to believe that taking their own lives is better than growing up gay.

WHEN: Thursday, Oct. 10, 2013

National Press Club, Washington, D.C. (529 14th Street, NW, 13th Floor)

Murrow Room

WHO: Michael Keegan, President, People for the American Way (PFAW)

Frank Schaeffer, author, “Sex, Mom, & God.”

Brent Childers, Executive Director, Faith In America

Wayne Besen, Executive Director of Truth Wins Out, co-founder of The NALT Christians Project

John and Catherine Shore, co-founders, The NALT Christians Project

Andy Lang, Executive Director, United Church of Christ Coalition for LGBT Concerns

Vivian Taylor, Executive Director, Integrity USA

Additional Speakers TBA

BACKGROUND: This is National Coming Out Week. At Thursday’s media conference, NALT Christians will step out to proclaim that people can be both pro-LGBT and fully Christian. An acronym coined by Dan Savage, NALT, stands for “Not All Like That” — meaning that not all Christians are anti-LGBT. Last month, was launched. An immediate sensation (written about in TIME, The American Prospect, The Washington Post, Leonard Pitts’ nationally syndicated column, and others) it is a website whereon, through their YouTube videos, LGBT-affirming Christians share their belief that there is nothing anti-biblical or sinful about being LGBT. One NALT video went viral, with more than a quarter of a million views in one week.

On Thursday, several prominent LGBT people and allies will release NALT videos: Bishop Gene Robinson, the first openly gay Episcopal Bishop; Jay Bakker, minister and son of Jim and Tammy Faye; Mel White, former ghostwriter for the late Rev. Jerry Falwell and Rev. Pat Robertson; award-winning gospel singer Ray Boltz; Randy Roberts Potts, the grandson of Oral Roberts; Justin Lee, founder of the Gay Christian Network; and author Frank Schaeffer, whose father, Francis, was a founder of the modern religious right.

Here’s a video we’ve made of moments from a few NALT Christians videos:

"The whole thing about wives submitting to husbands opens the door for these kind of ..."

"I have a stupid question for you:If you are asking someone else what to say ..."

Way to go John and Cat! My prayers will be fervent that Thursday will be a turning point in our history and more Christians will join the NALT cause! God Bless you both!

  • Matt

*whistle* You’re really hitting the big leagues, John and Cat! Looks like the best is yet to come for NALT and Christianity. And great timing, too. That Values Voter Summit could use some rainbow in their world. I’ll be praying!

Will there be video of the event? Pleasepleasepleasepleaseplease?

  • You know, actually, there will be. So yes!

  • Thanks, Matt!

  • This is very kind of you, Dana. Thank you.

  • Elizabeth

My first job out of college was in that building. The NAA, go figure. Which isn’t bragging; it means I arranged newspapers according to visiting dignitaries and know God-awful amounts about postal rate increases. Be sure to swing by the White House. It’s a block away. Break a leg, sir.

  • Judy

I am so proud to be a very very small part if this.

Fervently praying for all of you. God bless you and the work you do.

  • Kat

Hey, look at that, you’ve even got a Jew(ish convert, and self described “recovering Cathoholic”) rooting for you on this one.

Congrats, John. You, and your amazing friends, family, and contributors are nearly singlehandedly changing the dialogue on what it means to be Christian in America. This is something truly epic to see, and I am truly grateful to you all for standing up and pushing back against the bully religious right.

  • Holy Cow, John.

“I’ll see your Pope Francis and raise you a NALT.”

You and Cat are amazing. You are doing so much good in the world – not just for the 14 year old gay kid in the front pew, but also the 45 year old who wants to talk about his spiritual life with his friends.

You created a really powerful way to turn the volume up on the left channel of the stereo. I think it’s going to 11.

I’m more grateful than you can know. I am praying like crazy for you.

John! Is this open to the public? Can I come?

  • Lymis

Then make sure to share, at least a link!

  • Um. Well, so, I mean … who are you, basically? (Cuz you’d have to ask for me so I could let you in.)

  • Thanks David. I’m on the plane right now!
