Congratulations to the graduating class of Franciscan University at Steubenville! For so many reasons, your future is bright and your gifts are greatly needed. I was thrilled to be able to be a fly on the wall for your recent commencement speech delivered by one of my favorites, Lou Holtz! I thought I’d share it with our readers here, just in case they need a little pep talk from one of the world’s greatest motivators: Now “Doctor” Holtz shared some... Read more

I’ve been intentionally quiet the last few days. Perhaps my lack of an immediate, definitive and public reaction in the wake of last Friday’s news marks my lack of qualification as a blogger. In fact, I’m honestly still not ready to write publicly on that topic. You’ll find many on the Catholic Channel here discussing it eloquently from a variety of perspectives. As always, I point you in the direction of my editor and mentor Elizabeth Scalia for the first... Read more

The human heart plans the way, but the LORD directs the steps. Proverbs 16:9 Can being a road warrior or a frequent flyer be a call to participate in the Year of Mercy in a unique way? Can all of those hours spent waiting in airport terminals–or dashing through them to catch a tight connection–really be a call to holiness? A special report at the Vatican website caught my eye today: Airports need extra care from chaplains offers a recap document of... Read more

This weekend was a moment of celebration for my home Diocese of Fresno as three of our seminarians were ordained to the diaconate on Saturday. Their ordination marks the commencement of one final year of preparation for the priesthood and is a joyful moment for the faithful here in the Central Valley. A Father’s Love Since one of these faith-filled young men is from my own parish, we had the double blessing of hearing Michael Andrade’s homily at our 9:30... Read more

This was launched over a week ago, but somehow with all of yesterday’s mania over Laudato Si, it’s funnier than ever: What do you think? Are we allowed to have a little fun with this. You can probably guess my favorite part: the Holy Father tweeting! Read more

I’ve been praying this morning about how to possibly write about last night’s horrific tragedy in Charleston at the historic Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church.  There is no possible way to succinctly describe the horror of an intruder infiltrating a prayer meeting and then taking the lives of nine souls, including that of Rev. Clementa Pinckney, Emanuel’s pastor. While praying this morning for the victims and their families, my mind fled to my own parish. How would I react if someone... Read more

As I type this, I have the extreme pleasure of gazing over my own little corner of God’s creation. I’m home for a few weeks and soaking up the beauty of the Valley while I play “beat the clock” against a book deadline. I’ve found that it’s easy and pleasurable to take my laptop and sit on our backyard swing. From this vantage point, the hum of my neighbors air conditioning unit doing battle with the 100+ degree temperatures melds... Read more

Welcome to the June check-in for our “Your Yes for 2015” Adventure. If you’re joining us today for the first time, find the index of all of the days here. What happened to the second quarter of 2015? Has anyone seen it? It seems to have slipped right past me! If you’re paying attention, you’ve notice that I was negligent in doing “Your Yes” check-ins for April and May. I could barrage you with a cavalcade of excuses. And they are... Read more
