That Time I Crashed a Bachelor Viewing Party and It Broke My Heart: My “Micaela’s Army” Story April 16, 2015

Three years ago I received an email from an old friend of mine named Ruthie who worked at the children’s hospital in Dallas. I had recently returned to Dallas after shooting The Bachelorette and the show had just begun to air on TV. Ruthie told me a story that was so touching, it nearly brought me to tears.

Ruthie informed that while working in the children’s hospital, she became closely acquainted with a young girl named Micaela who had been battling cancer (Acute Myeloid Leukemia to be exact). Micaela was the type of young girl that every parent dreams of having- she was funny, smart, talented, beautiful and kind. Micaela was also an excellent big sister to her brother Jack who has faced his own set of challenges with Down’s Syndrome. Micaela, like most teenage girls, was a dreamer who looked forward to the adventures that awaited her in the future. She dreamed of going to Oklahoma University after graduating high school and then volunteering for the Peace Corps in Africa and eventually landing in New York City.

Sadly Micaela did not get to live out those dreams. Micaela passed away from her battle with Leukemia during her senior year of high school.

So as Ruthie is telling me about this beautiful girl who was taken far too early, she goes on to say that Micaela and her friend’s favorite show is The Bachelor and they used to watch it every Monday. Not only that but her friends, who had just completed their freshman years at college, would gather at Micaela’s parent’s house to watch the show in her honor. Not only was this a touching act but she felt that her friend’s presence in the house really brought a sense of comfort to Micaela’s mom Sharon.
