I want a family like the Robertsons from Duck Dynasty.

Yes, I’m aware that’s a slightly odd statement considering the images of camouflage and beards that come to mind when thinking about Duck Dynasty, but it’s true. Last weekend, Catherine and I had the honor of speaking at Sadie Robertson’s “Live Original” event in Nashville. This event was big, and so well done. Sadie sold out a small basketball arena (about 4,000 young girls) and spoke on issues that most young girls struggle with like insecurities and relationships and what the Bible says about those things. I could go on and on about how impressed I was with Sadie and her heart for the Lord but I’ll save that for another day. Today I want to talk about her family.

Our trip to Nashville was brief. We flew in Saturday morning, took part in the event that evening and flew back to Dallas the next day. But along the way, Catherine and I had the chance to meet a bunch of Sadie’s family members. We met her mom, her brothers and sisters, her grandmother and some cousins too. After meeting all of those Robertsons, I was simply inspired by their love for Jesus. I’m not exaggerating, each member of that family exuded Christ’s love and it was so cool to see how they were all there to support Sadie in her mission to share that love with thousands of young girls. Before going on stage, the whole family, some friends, and Catherine and I prayed for the event and during that time, it was so evident how much that family loves God. It was also really inspiring to see the way Sadie’s siblings were interacting and supporting her. I could tell that they all were genuinely happy and excited for her and her gigantic undertaking. As I was watching them, I was thinking how easy it would be for some of them to be jealous of her for her notoriety or accomplishments, but they weren’t at all.

So there’s your first hand account of the Robertson family. They are just as great as the appear on TV. I think I’ll head on down to Walmart now and buy me a camo shirt. Give me another four years or so and I’ll have a beard to match. Until then, do as the Robertsons do and spread God’s love.
