Seven things at 1 o’clock (6.20) June 20, 2013

1. What is international food aid for? If it’s mainly a subsidy for American farmers and shipping companies, then we should leave it as it is. But if the main goal is to keep poor people from starving, then we should reform the way it’s done.

2. Franklin Graham is unclear on the concept of “intolerance.”

3. “Promposals” are a Thing That Needs To Stop. If you set out to design some kind of ritualistic rite-of-passage intended to reinforce Mad-Men era gender roles, you couldn’t do much better than inventing the prom. This trend makes proms even more so. Let the backlash begin. (via Charles Kuffner)

4. Matt Yglesias looks at the intersection of slavery and immigration. If you’re opposed to the former, you really shouldn’t be opposed to the latter.

5. The Christian-brand subculture has imitated everything else, so really this seems like the next logical step: “Support Christian Porn: Filmed procreation. Porn the way God intended.” A parody with pitch-perfect tone, content and design. (via Amy Mitchell)

6. “But any prophet who speaks in the name of other gods, or who presumes to speak in my name a word that I have not commanded the prophet to speak — that prophet shall die. You may say to yourself, ‘How can we recognize a word that the Lord has not spoken?’ If a prophet speaks in the name of the Lord but the thing does not take place or prove true, it is a word that the Lord has not spoken. The prophet has spoken it presumptuously; do not be frightened by it.” — Deuteronomy 18:20-22

7. Neil Patrick Harris will put on some make up, turn on the tape deck, and pull the wig back on his head. The NPH will play the lead in the Broadway revival of Hedwig and the Angry Inch. As was meant to be. Here’s Kim and Kelley Deal doing “Wicked Little Town.”
