After a fairly rotten morning (missing shoe, comments, impending global warming and so forth), I decided to cheer myself up by arriving at the University of Western Australia's central campus via TARDIS.And then it broke down. FML. Some very nice students helped me tow it to the UWA Atheists and Skeptic Society booth, where I called Gallifrey Auto Repairs and they said they'd try to be there around lunch, give or take a century or two.The team were already set up and had some … [Read more...]

I'm honestly wearing just one shoe and about to run out the door as soon as I find the other. But quickly: "The O-Day Festival is the BIGGEST student event on campus! Taking place on Friday 24 February 2012, the last day of O-Week, UWA explodes into life for the year with live music, giveaways, food, hundreds of stalls and thousands of students covering James Oval and Koort Kwoba Dandjoo (Guild Village)." The UWA Atheist and Skeptics society has a stall and that'll be near where it was last … [Read more...]
I'm about to run out the door to attend a lecture by Germaine Greer (it happens to be the opening night of the Perth Writers Festival), but here's a few snaps from another first: The Murdoch University Atheist and Agnostic Society.I met Robert of the MASS near the social sciences building, just on the edges of the Bush Court. Which is why all my photos are kind of washed-out, as it was a bright morning and the light was behind us. Sorry about that. Anyway, you can see Robert wrestling with … [Read more...]
Okay, the title is clearly hyperbole. But I laughed anyway: A BRISBANE woman fleeced Nigerian scam artists by stealing more than $30,000 from their internet car sales racket, a court has been told. Sarah Jane Cochrane-Ramsey, 23, was employed by the Nigerians as an "agent" in March 2010 but was unaware they were scam artists, the Brisbane District Court heard today. Her job was to provide an Australian bank account through which they could funnel any payments they received through their dodgy … [Read more...]

"It’s that time of year again, when anti-choice group 40 Days for Life celebrate the run up to Easter by picketing abortion clinics, spreading misinformation and generally making life difficult for women using services and clinic staff. This year, inspired by the lovely 40 Days of Treats, we have decided to use the annual protest to celebrate the right to safe, legal abortion and run our very own 40 day choice-a-thon. Every day we’ll be posting small, positive steps that we can all take to incre … [Read more...]
I am in such a snit at the moment. I could almost start devoting days at a time to action role-playing computer games as a result. Because (oh be still, my bruised ego!) - it appears I have been left out of the cabal of hipsterness, the club of coolness, the...Well, I wasn't sent a sodding spam email, even though I'm at the 2012 Global Atheist Convention. HURT.Actually, no. But I am counting my (non-Christian) blessings that I don't have one more thing to delete from the in-box:In case … [Read more...]
After reviewing the verse of Digital Cuttlefish (poet laureate of the Scientific Blogohedron) and remembering a comment they made, long ago - I began wondering as to what extent is it true that one MUST practice in order to write good poetry.Good poetry is a passion of mine; I've even sent two friends copies of Stephen Fry's guide to poetry - 'The Ode Less Travelled: Unlocking the Poet Within':I believe poetry is a primal impulse within us all. I believe we are all capable of it and furth … [Read more...]
Michael McRae, who has appeared several times on the Token Skeptic podcast, has his book reviewed by Daniel Loxton over on Skeptic Blogs: I’ve been enjoying an “Uncorrected Advance Reading Copy” of the upcoming U.S. edition of Mike McRae’s Tribal Science from Prometheus Books, which has once again put me in mind of something I think about often: the considerable bogusness of the conceit of “skeptics” versus “believers.” There is a social subculture that can be called “skepticism” and there is a n … [Read more...]
Are You A Skeptic / Atheist At A Perth University? Podcast, Open Days And Student Leadership Conference!
THREE THINGS YOU MUST KNOW, students of Perth (and indeed Australia and beyond)!Firstly - out tomorrow! I'm on the verge of releasing Token Skeptic Episode One Hundred and Nine - On FreeThinking Students: In 2010, Rhys Morgan made headlines across the UK for discovering a disturbing and hazardous "cure all" called Miracle Medical Solution, lent his name to a libel reform claim and investigated the claims of the Burzynski clinic. On Rhys’ blog, he wrote: "If you’re involved in the skeptical and/ … [Read more...]
