Why? Yes, it’s St. Valentine’s and all that, but guys! Audrey Assad’s new album Heart was released today! I was lucky enough to get a few pre-release copies, and I held a listening party at Steubie. Check it out: The album is absolutely brilliant. So much of Audrey’s first album is completed by it — the questions asked in The House You’re Building are answered in Heart. (Not that that takes away from mystery and beauty contained in Heart, not by... Read more

…is an awesome book. It’s the most reflective writing I’ve seen from West. He makes the crucial point that if we Christians can reclaim the human body as an icon that points to God, then we can evangelize the world. The Catholics of Patheos are using it to have a great discussion concerning sexuality, the Theology of the Body and all that beautiful stuff, over at the Patheos Book Club. (I especially enjoyed Brandon Vogt’s writeup, which gives the book... Read more

Dear Mr. President, When you announced you were making an accommodation for religious institutions morally opposed to paying for their employees’ contraceptives and sterilizations, I thought “aw hell yeah!” and “he read my letter!” and “he likes me!” and “we’re gonna hang out and drink beer at the House!” and I imagined you all like this… …and life was beautiful. But my exuberance was short-lived, for as it turns out, you missed my letter entirely. That, or you’ve decided that this is... Read more

…about the whole government-hates-us thing — or in case you’re depressed about anything, really — I have something for you. This is American Protestant preaching at its best: Let us never forget that our Lord goes before us, winning our battles. Read more

Having tested the waters of agnosticism, the general culture, and a whole host of personal heresies, sins and stupidities, I have come to Walker Percy’s conclusion: Q: What kind of Catholic are you? A. Bad. Q: Are you a dogmatic Catholic or an open-minded Catholic? A: I don’t know what that means . . . . Do you mean do I believe the dogma that the Catholic Church proposes for belief? Q: Yes. A: Yes. Q: How is such a... Read more

(Warning: May be entirely incomprehensible to those born before the 90’s.) I am currently and wonderfully immersed in the world of Avatar. And no, I am not referring to the oppressed-Pocahontas version: Now, to justify the amount of time I don’t spend on my classwork, hear me out: We have a horrible habit of trivializing our nerdy, childhood fads — Pokemon, Digimon, Beyblade, Yu-Gi-Oh, X-Men, Justice League, Dragonball Z, or any one of the thousands of fantasy books blatantly ripping off Tolkien.... Read more

At last Wednesday’s White House press briefing, a CNS reporter asked Nancy Pelosi — a self-claimed devout Catholic — if she would stand with the Church and oppose the HHS contraceptive mandate as an assault on religious freedom. In summary: Pelosi, listen. You are not with your fellow Catholics. Having the blessing of being a Catholic myself — though admittedly not a devout Catholic — I can’t help but take offense that you included me in your crazy, deluded circle,... Read more

Our sexually-liberated culture is a joke. That is to say, it is “a thing that someone says to cause amusement or laughter, especially a story with a funny punchline” (Merriam-Webster). Yep, there’s a punchline at the end of The Sexual Revolution, if ever a punchline made you sob, throw up, and hate yourself for the rest of the week. It is this: We’re all Puritans! Again! Not in our actions, mind you, but in our reaction to the fact of the... Read more
