The Question of God: Freud and Lewis

Sigmund Freud & C.S. Lewis with Dr. Armand NicholiFreud and Lewis may seem a strange combination, but as an attempt to contrast two world views you could scarely choose a better pair. The program Question of God aired last wednesday and the second part will air next wednesday.

I know I am a bit late to this party. Most bloggers have already commented on this, but I only got my special preview copy a few days after the first part of the series aired. Incidently it is an interesting development in blogging that we are being courted by the ‘old media’ in such a way. Maybe one day they will even pay us!

I was impressed with the program. I agree that the panel appeared biased towards an irreligious view, but then so is our society. Despite this, the program could not make Freud more attractive than Lewis. The two men came accross quite clearly. It is strange that despite the flagrant hostility and rebellion against God of Freud many of his ideas are well accepted in todays church. The honest faith of C.S.Lewis which wrestled with doubt and overcame could not have contrasted more with the angry man who asked his doctor to end his life. It is well worth watching, and certainly made me think. Perhaps for some of us we continue to believe in God partly because the alternative is too gastly to consider.
