A Misguided Sexual Ethic…
I mean, oof, where to even begin…?
There’s interracial marriage, there’s “courting” and Joshua Harris’ now retracted book “I Kissed Dating Goodbye,” there’s a culture of shame and fear around sex that has caused identity crises and even been linked to mental illness and suicides. Meanwhile, conservatives like Albert Mohler are still saying stuff like this:
“In heaven, is the crucible of our saint-making going to have been through our jobs? I don’t think so. The Scripture makes clear that it will be done largely through our marriages.” – Dr. Albert Mohler
In case you’re not following, this couldn’t be further from the truth (read more here, from Christena Cleveland on this).
And, our misinformed culture has lead to this marriage-centric form of ministry that says single people are somehow worth less than married people. Again, it shames the divorced, creates an unhealthy sense of urgency for the singles, and is toxically unbiblical.
And, by unbiblical I just mean incorrect…
“Solomon had 300 concubines. In Genesis 4:19, “Lamech married two women.” David, Abraham, and Jacob infamously had multiple wives. Not to mention that in 2 Samuel 12:8, the prophet Nathan said that if David’s wives and concubines were not enough, God would have given the king even more. To be clear, polygamy and bigamy are not overtly condemned in the Christian Old Testament. From a non-traditional perspective, it’s arguable that pre-marital sex is not explicitly condemned in either the New or Old Testament. Neither does the text layout, incontrovertibly, where the line is drawn and/or what exactly is considered to be sexual “immorality.” (Read more on this “New Sexual Ethic“)
It honestly just shoots the Churches or individuals preaching this in their own foot.
Which, speaking of polarizing…
