3.
It’s Entrenched in Politics.
Look, it honestly doesn’t matter what they say or how good their rhetoric is…
Nobody wants to swim in a swamp.
And, if you were like me and born into the swamp you know that this particular swamp has some deformed mutated bread of sharks, snakes, and ‘gators that are self-regeneratively dangerous. It comes across irresponsible to invite others into these same waters [2].
My hope is that these particular progressive leaders will stop trying to invite others back into the swamp but will come to join the rest of us progressives living out in the world. Or, at the very least, continue to refine this movement to include those of us younger leaders not called to swim in these political waters.
(I write more on this here in my post titled, “What’s Keeping Progressive Christianity from Actually Progressing?“)
And, genuinely/wholeheartedly I do not believe any of these leaders are “snakes”; I’ve only met with Campolo [once] and know his son Bart (who has mentored me and I’ve mad love for!) meaning, I don’t know any of these leaders to aimlessly hurl insults at them. I’m not doing that here. I’m simply saying that the political world is scary – while I do believe these women and men are called into it more than others. I also believe there is much-needed support for others on the outside of D.C. that would otherwise support and very much aid/jump in with this movement.
They’re Doing So Much So Right, Though!
Their marketing is on point!
The thought leaders they’ve chosen to put at the forefront are great!
The timing of their launch was perfect; as Bishop Curry preached and (I think?) proceeded the “royal wedding” which honestly, money can’t pay for that type of once in a lifetime form of opportunity. And they seized this moment perfectly.
They toe the lines of playing the game of consumeristic Christianity (by reaching the masses) yet, seem to have produced a good “first edition” of this book (or, software in beta testing).
