I wanted to show my #whovian colors on this #DayOfTheDoctor and I could find no better way than to post this beautiful image made by my friend Ashley Collins. Here you go: Pope Benedict XVI with a lightsaber in the TARDIS – Son of Bosco. Read more
Over in the Progressive Christian channel, Tony Jones has proposed a radical idea this week. He seems to think that the only way for the church to resolve the tensions surrounding the role of women in the church is for those in the egalitarian camp of the church to break off ties completely with those they disagree with. Tony states: The time has come for a schism regarding the issue of women in the church. Those of us who know that women should... Read more
This weeks question: Do you have a Book/Video Game/Movie/whatever that made you weep? Like literally start bawling from the sadness or the beauty of it? I have a confession to make… I cry. I have been known to weep at the sight of a sunset, or during the chorus of a song, and often while just sitting in prayer or at mass. I am a sucker for moments of beauty and grace. Yes, in fact crying is something I actually enjoy.... Read more
This may not come as a surprise to you, but Christianity is a two thousand year-old religion. For much of my life in Protestantism this little fact was completely off my radar. Two thousand years is actually a really long time and considering that the period after the Reformation makes up only one-fourth of that actual timeline of the church, I believe it’s worth it for all Christians (Protestant, Catholic and Eastern Orthodox) to always try and learn more about those... In my brief time here at Patheos I have already caused a couple of fights, and I’m feeling battered and bruised (it’s not fun to have people doubt your faith, or call you names). As tough as it is to hear critiques I am so glad I was able to hear them this week. It helped me learn a few lessons: 1. Commentators are drawn to blood! If I want to get people to comment I should attack things other people have said. This is something I really am... Read more
Gregory Palamas once wrote that heaven would be akin to a dance without end before the throne of God (On the divine Energies, 76). This image is powerful, one can imagine the Church adorned in wedding garments joyfully being led into the dance of the life of God. Each step in rhythm with grace and love, each measure drawing us into the embrace of the unfathomable mystery. Such a vision is in many ways to wonderful for words, but for... Read more
So today on @FatherZ ‘s blog I saw an image that really disturbed me. It was a depiction of the Mass being celebrated “ad orientem” (facing toward a crucifix) contrasted with the mass being celebrated “ad populum” (facing toward the people). It asked the question, which makes sense? Here is the image in question. First I have to make it clear that, although the evidence seems clear that a number of the ancient churches in Rome were constructed so that the priest would serve facing the... Read more
Do you remember when Francis called for a global day of fasting for peace? Well he’s decided he’s going to try to change the world through prayer again! On December 10th, human rights day, the Pope is sparking off what’s being called, “a global wave of prayer” that will spread across the world starting noon in Australia and sweeping across the world. This will be the kick off of a global campaign in the Catholic Church not only to fight hunger... Read more
Today in D.C. the Jesuits are descending. I’m thrilled to be hanging out with hundreds of young people who are looking to explore what it means to an active Catholic in Washington D.C. The Ignation family Teach-in brings presenters from all over the country together to talk about issues of justice in our world today. I’m heading up the efforts of Bread for the World here. We will be presenting tomorrow on: creating a “Circle of Protection” around essential safety net... Read more
