Amy starts the show off by talking about F-Bombs left and right. In the echo chamber, the crew discusses Sarah Palin’s recent statement at an NRA rally that waterboarding is how Americans would “baptize” terrorists, were she in charge. This leads into a discussion on the death of Christian hegemony and whether or not labels can (or should) be rescued. Christian shares Tea Party Jesus with the group. He thinks it’s hilarious, Amy and Jess the Intern, not so much. Jess and Andy talk... Read more
I chatted with Aric Clark, Nick Larson, and Doug Hagler, best known online as Two Friars and a Fool, a blog and podcast about theology and spiritual practice, sexuality, and popular culture. They recently wrote their first book, Never Pray Again: Lift Your Head, Unfold Your Hands and Get to Work. The intentionally provocative title emphasizes the need for Christians to get outside of our own heads and churches, and about the business of being the hands and feet of... Read more
So I showed up naked to this church and got the weirdest looks. Hey, if you’re gonna make it an option, I’m gonna hold you to it. Better than holding it to you, eh? (Ba dum bum!) Read more
As children, from wherever the reasons stem, we worry about monsters under our bed or the boogieman in our closet. We are taught to hate – or at least fear – the darkness. After all, God calls us to the light. We are people of the light. In Barbara Brown Taylor’s new book, Learning to Walk in the Dark, she shares her experience and insights after intentionally spending time in the dark. For four years Taylor establishes some spiritual practices... Read more
One phrase comes to mind, time and again, when I think of Frank Schaeffer: “THINK AGAIN.” Any time I think I have a handle on things theological, he seems to find the thread, hanging from the edges, and gives it a good, solid yank. Such is the case once again with his newest book, “Why I am an Atheist Who Believes in God: How to give love, create beauty and find peace.” Just when it seems the delineations between theism... Yes, we’re late on getting this post-Easter show out. Whaddaya want, your money back? As we try to recover from our collective post-Easter hangovers, the topics range from stomach-turning in the gross sense to stomach turning in the scary sense. Nothing like variety! Andy quizzes the CultureCast team on the best way to remove a dead whale from the beach, and then they move on to such savory topics as sex scandals within the Biblical Patriarchy (aka, Quiverfull) movement. You... Read more
You know, it’s bad enough trying to compete with the media’s portrayal of beauty and sexuality without God being better at THAT than me too… Read more
Few of us were surprised when we heard the clip of Sarah Palin making the uncouth and insensitive remark at the National Rifle Association meeting about how “waterboarding is how we baptize terrorists.” Clearly she lacks self-awareness or will do or say anything to grab a headline. The unfortunate and disturbing truth is that she speaks on behalf a subset of Christian culture in the Unite States. Though this subset of Christian extremists is shrinking, it is one that still... Donald Sterling, eccentric billionaire and owner – at least for the moment – of the Los Angeles Clippers basketball team, learned firsthand the weight of his own words on Tuesday. After allegedly being recorded making numerous racist remarks about African-Americans (both on his team and otherwise), the National Basketball Association handed him a lifetime suspension from association with his own team, along with a $2.5 million fine. Though Sterling’s comments were highly inflammatory and distasteful, the NBA’s swift and severe consequences helps... Read more
