The old saw is that it is unfair to have a battle of wits with an unarmed person, and if ever there was a witless human being it is Bryan Fischer. And his discussion of the recent court ruling on health care reform is rather amusing:

Judge Roger Vinson declared the entire ObamaCare monstrosity “void” earlier this week. This means it is a legal nullity. He set the whole thing aside. It has no force of law, period.

Well no, that isn’t what it means. The ruling will certainly be stayed pending appeal, if not by Vinson himself then by the appeals court. It will also almost certainly be overturned by the appeals court because Supreme Court precedent is squarely on the side of the broadest imaginable interpretation of the commerce clause (whether that should be the case or not is irrelevant; lower courts are still bound by precedent).

Here’s the AFA’s uber-bigot Bryan Fischer on gays in the military:

And remember that the folks that want this special treatment, their only distinguishing mark, the only thing that sets them apart from everybody else and then entire basis on which they are asking for special treatment, special privileges, special protections is the kind of unnatural sex they practice! That’s it! You can’t tell by looking at them; unless they tell you, you wouldn’t know. But they want special protections that are based exclusively on the kind of deviant sexual behavior in which they engage – putting parts of the human body to sexual use that were not designed for that purpose.

Bryan Fischer, the AFA’s radio show host and chief blogger, has upped the crazy ante on the anti-mosque fervor. Not content merely to prevent the opening of a mosque near ground zero, Fischer now says that there should be no more mosques allowed to be built anywhere in the United States.

Now mind you, he’s being logically consistent. If you’re going to take the position that mosques all teach dangerous things that we shouldn’t allow in the United States, then it should make no difference whether the mosque is near ground zero or not. He says:

The Metroplex Atheists are hosting a seminar about the official motto of the United States, “In God We Trust,” on July 14th. They bought signs to advertise the event and purchased space to put up the banners from the city, which promptly got nearly 100 complaints from offended residents. Then they went a step further and vandalized the signs by cutting them up.

On Friday, Trump tweeted out a pro-LGBT message for pride month. Any thinking person was left shaking their head, but his supporters and opponents are showing a range of reactions to that incredibly hypocritical message. Here are his tweets:

The Huffington Post has an article in the wake of the massacre at a mosque in New Zealand calling Islamophobia a “global crisis.” It looks at anti-Muslim extremism by the far-right, but also briefly mentions Sam Harris, Bill Maher and Richard Dawkins. American Atheists shared the article on their Facebook page and my friend Seth Andrews responded, in part:

In the wake of Chief Justice John Roberts’ virtually irrelevant procedural vote to keep a stay in place on a Louisiana abortion law, a whole lot of right-wing commentators are freaking out, calling him a hack and part of the Deep State. Bryan Fischer even says he’s now an “Obama judge.”

Deranged anti-gay bigot Scott Lively is once again running for governor of Massachusetts and he told Bryan Fischer that he thinks God is going to perform a miracle and engineer the election so he wins. And if you believe that, I’ve got a brilliant multi-level marketing scheme that will make you fabulously rich.

Sen. Cory Booker has been questioning Secretary of State nominee Mike Pompeo about how his anti-gay religious views would affect American policy on the mistreatment of LGBT people in other countries. Predictly, the Christian right is throwing a tantrum over it, dishonestly and hypocritically accusing him of establishing a religious test for office, which would be forbidden by the Constitution.

As if we needed another one, two of our old pals here at Dispatches, Matt Barber and Gordon Klingenschmitt, have combined to form a sort-of far-right legal super group. They’re calling it the Christian Civil Rights Watch, because true civil rights belong only to Christians.

One of the reasons why the Christian right supports Donald Trump so strongly may be because of his affinity for Vladimir Putin, a man some (but not all) of them view as leading a return to traditional Christian values (bigotry, mainly). Roy Moore expressed that attitude perfectly a few months ago:

One of the bizarre views that Christian fascist Roy Moore holds about the Constitution is identical to the one held by Bryan Fischer, that the religion clauses of the First Amendment apply only to Christianity. He thinks when it says religion, it means Christianity.
