Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council is a desperate man. He’s losing the fight over LGBT equality and he knows it, but he has to keep the money flowing in somehow. What’s a good Christian to do? Lie through his teeth, of course, something Perkins is both experienced and adept at.
You may have heard the story of a teacher in North Carolina who read the book King and King, a fairy tale about a gay couple, to his third grade class. He resigned after a public freak out. Tony Perkins, of course, thinks this is just proof that schools now indoctrinate instead of teach.
Tony Perkins continues to claim that he never called for the impeachment of Supreme Court justices over their votes in cases involving same-sex marriage, even though we have him on audio saying that we “absolutely” should impeach them when another host says they should be impeached. But Jeremy Hooper now has even more proof, Perkins directly calling for Justice Kennedy to be impeached for his ruling in the DOMA case. You’re lying, Tony. And all of this is a matter of public record.
Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council is getting desperate. He sent out a fundraising letter begging for money because, he says, gay rights and Obama are to blame for ISIS because they “closely watch America’s domestic affairs” and if we don’t protect religious freedom, they are inspired to kill more Christians.
Bryan Fischer recently told his audience that they should only go to a same-sex marriage if they first send a letter to the couple explaining why you think it’s wrong. But that was a bit too warm and fuzzy for a caller to Tony Perkins’ radio show, who said you should go only to interrupt the wedding and tell them they’re going to hell.
Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council (read: Anti-gay Bigot Council) went on an extended rant about Hillary Clinton, claiming that because she’s pro-choice and pro-gay rights, she wants nothing less than the “complete demolition of the natural family.”
Tony Perkins is nothing if not a persistent salesman. And the idea he’s been selling for the last year or so is that “intolerance” of Christians here at home somehow fuels persecution — real persecution, not the fake kind he claims exists here — abroad. Like if you don’t let a pizza shop discriminate against gay people in Indiana, Muslims in Pakistan will murder more Christians than they otherwise would have.
The New England Patriots joined two other professional sports franchises and more than 300 corporations in filing an amicus brief with the Supreme Court supporting marriage equality. Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council thinks this makes them unpatriotic.
The New York City public schools, like any other school, closes for many religious holidays, most obviously Christmas. It was just announced that they would now close for two Muslim holidays, Eid al-Adha and Eid al-Fitr. Cue the inane claims that this is somehow anti-Christian persecution.
I’m kinda disappointed in Tony Perkins. He’s usually one of the frontrunners in the ongoing contest among Christian right “thinkers” in making the most outlandish and hyperbolic predictions, but the best he can seem to muster about the impending gay marriage ruling is that it would send America “into a tailspin.”
Ladies and gentlemen, we have a brand spanking new argument from the Christian right against gay rights. It comes from Tony Perkins, who says that if Christians are required not to discriminate against gay people in their businesses, they’re now living under “involuntary servitude” — slavery.
