SO, what was it that changed me from a Star Wars prequel-hater to a… well… something different? As I debated “Jessi-Wan Kenobi,” (AKA Jessica the Uberfan) on many occasions, she consistently drew upon Star Wars “stuff” not contained in the films—the Expanded Universe. Here is the definition of the Expanded Universe (now called “Star Wars Legends”) from Wookiepedia: The Expanded Universe (or EU for short) encompasses every one of the officially licensed, fictional background stories of the Star Wars universe,... Read more

It’s been one year since I was confirmed in the Catholic Church with a bunch of junior high school kids. That glorious day brought to completion a long journey that began in my intense love for novels. While it’s true that my time with atheists at Ohio State had a significant impact on my faith journey, it was not the spark that ignited the inferno. Rather, my journey to Rome began in my own imagination when I realized that all... Read more

Are you ready for the new Star Wars movies? Were you ready for the prequels? Or does your spacefaring heart beat only for the original trilogy? You see, something weird happened to me. Something which may cause me to lift the ban preventing the prequel movies from getting within 100 feet of my house. And lest you think this is just some tired old rant, this little blog series will include interviews with Bryan Young (recognized guru and Con fixture... Read more

(Jonathan Ryan posting for new Rogue writer, Jen Schlameuss-Perry.) I finally got to see Dracula Untold the other night. I’ve been wanting to see it since I saw the first trailer months before it was in the theaters. I thought it was pretty good—it included the proper history of Vlad and included some very interesting moral questions. I’ve always been sympathetic to Dracula. Don’t get me wrong—vampires are the worst (besides European dragons—I don’t get all this Hollywood propaganda... Read more

I’ve always fancied myself a candid photographer. Oftentimes when I show up for work armed with my trusty camera and a huge cup of coffee, many groans and unsuccessful attempts to hide take place. I’m the ninja photographer of social media, quietly and unobtrusively taking photos of people when they least expect (or appreciate it). I’m just doing my job, and I love doing it. A few quick shots of what we do and why it matters is all I... Read more

(Jonathan Ryan posting on behalf of new Rogue writer, Jen Schlameuss-Perry.) I enjoy Gotham without shame. I look forward to it every week. I like seeing the development of the supervillains and of little Bruce Wayne. Monday’s episode showed the beginnings of one of my favorite villains, Dr. Jonathan Crane; aka Scarecrow. Last night, I inadvertently became scarier than Scarecrow after watching the show and getting the idea for this blog. I tried to text myself this line from the show... Read more

(Jonathan Ryan posting on behalf of The Rogue’s newest writer, Jenn O’Mara.) For the last two nights, I’ve stayed up way too late to watch the two part premiere of AMC’s newest original series, Better Call Saul, co-created by Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould. Saul is the prequel-spin off (prin-off? Is that a thing?) of AMC’s smash hit, Breaking Bad, of which I was also a huge fan. Saul is shifting the light away from drug-cooking teachers and focusing on... Read more

As everyone who has been around the Rogue long enough knows, I’m a huge Daredevil fan (Click here  and here to see why). So, when Marvel announced they would do a TV series on Netflix, it was all I could do to refrain from uttering a Ron Swanson giggle of glee. The tone of this trailer…wow. It got everything right, especially Matt’s conflicted Catholicism, which is the heart of his story. Bam. I’m totally in.         Read more

(Jonathan Ryan posting on behalf of new Rogue writer, Jen Schlameuss-Perry.) About a year ago our parish had a visiting priest saying Mass who had one of the most astonishing homilies I’ve ever heard. It was all about The X-Files. Yes—I said about a year ago. My first thought was, “Wow! I LOVE The X-Files! How cool is this!” My second thought was, “Wait…that was on like 20 years ago. Did this guy just pull out a 20 year old homily... Read more

Ecclesiastes 3 sums it up like this: For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted; a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time... Read more
