18 So the Lord said to Moses, “Take Joshua son of Nun, a man in whom is the spirit of leadership, and lay your hand on him. 19 Have him stand before Eleazar the priest and the entire assembly and commission him in their presence. 20 Give him some of your authority so the whole Israelite community will obey him. -Numbers 27:18-20
Our culture is all about leaders–how to find them, make them, and become them. We celebrate celebrities and look to those at the top to point the way. Because of the emphasis on leaders in our culture, many are curious about how to become a better leader themselves, debating whether leaders are born or developed, or perhaps a combination of both.
But Scripture is clear about the true nature of leadership. Those who lead in our world may do so because of charisma or status, but the leaders God chooses are those God chooses and empowers. There is no training program or family line that provides an advantage. It is his choosing and his timing that makes all the difference.
You may be unsatisfied about your influence today, but God can change your world in a day, just as he did with Joshua. After forty years as the secretary of Moses, he was suddenly commissioned as the leader of an entire nation. It wasn’t his skills that got him there; it was God.
Focus on growing in Christ today, being faithful in the small things. When God is ready, he will take you from where you are to where he wants you to be, whether in a moment or over an extended period of time. He is the creator of leaders. Lean on him today.
