Judges 5: Deborah’s Song

Judges 5: Deborah’s Song

“But may all who love you be like the sun when it rises in its strength.” -Judges 5:31

Upon the nation’s victory, Deborah led the people in a new song inspired by the Lord. It’s conclusion marks the theme of the hymn: “May all who love you be like the sun when it rises in its strength.”

What does this mean? The sun was consider the strongest of lights and the greatest of power in the Jewish worldview. When Deborah sang these words, she declared her desire that those who love God would be strong and rise up like the sun. God’s people would ultimately conquer their enemies and live in peace.

On many occasions, it seems like following God has no connection with strength. We struggle while others who despise God appear to live with success. But such judgments reveal the limitations of our sight. When our perspective is eternal, the successes and struggles of this life are but a small part of our future.

Let us view today knowing that God triumphs in the end and that his followers will experience joy with him for eternity. Today may bring trouble, but the future will bring triumph.
