The Case of Suzanne Basso: Would Jesus Execute Her?

Suzanne Basso.  Take a second and repeat that name.  Suzanne Basso.

Suzanne Basso was sentenced to death for the 1998 slaying of Buddy Musso.  The body of Buddy Musso was found in a ditch lacerated, covered in bleach and scrapped with a wire brush.  There is also evidence that Suzanne Basso made herself the beneficiary of Buddy Musso’s insurance policies and Social Security benefits.  Tonight at 6pm, Suzanne Basso is to be given a lethal dose of chemicals and put to death by us…the citizens of the State of Texas.

Suzanne Basso.  Take a second and repeat that name.  Suzanne Basso.

Is it possible…even after all the crimes she was convicted of…Suzanne Basso is still a human being created in the image of God and loved by God just like the rest of us?  Tonight, those whose hearts seek vengeance will have to answer no, turn their eyes away and call Suzanne Basso a monster, possessed and other silly names out of storybooks to dehumanize her and assuage their consciences.  Those who have the courage to state the obvious fact that Suzanne Basso is a human being created in the image of God and loved by God just like the rest of us, they will have to join me and look directly into the eyes of Suzanne Basso and know that the State of Texas will turn all of us as citizens…whether we look or not…into murderers tonight.  Whether our hands are there or not…it will be all of us who push the needle into the arm of Suzanne Basso…it will be all of us who force chemicals into the body of Suzanne Basso…it will be all of us who watch the life slowly drain from the eyes and face of Suzanne Basso…it will be all of us who dispose of the lifeless body of Suzanne Basso.

Suzanne Basso.  Take a second and repeat that name.  Suzanne Basso.

Suzanne Basso is a beloved child of God.

Would Jesus execute her?

Go and do likewise.

Amen.
