*I posted a version of this on Palm Sunday 2015 +The use of the word “waive” instead of the word “wave” is intentional.   The people of Jerusalem waived their palms madly to celebrate the entry of Jesus into their town. Less than seven days later, Jesus was tortured and executed in the same place. Though Palm Sunday is a time to celebrate, I can never get past the fact that the same palm waivers either participated in or... Read more

Jesus was enraged. The money changers were ripping off the poorest in the community. Jesus kicked them out. Why don’t we respond similarly? Is there any difference between the money changers and the payday lenders in our communities? I don’t think so. Where is our rage?   Amen. Read more

When faced with a woman’s impending execution, Jesus got down in the dirt with her. If the stones had flown, Jesus would’ve died. Jesus didn’t entertain any conversation. Jesus remained silent and got down in the dirt. In our culture, we keep seeing people thrown in the dirt. Instead of joining the oppressed and marginalized, we keep asking for more conversation. We don’t believe in following Jesus. We believe in conversation. We are heretics.   Amen. Read more

Here in Texas, justice is swift and injustice is too. When violence happens, one has to pay close attention to make sure they know the difference.   Farmers Branch is known for injustice. Persons of color don’t get a fair shake within the city limits. Not too far up the road, there is a city called Addison. Things function similarly there. This is where the murder went down.   Farmers Branch police officer Ken Johnson was working as a... Read more

We have to stop denying the humanity of Jesus by neglecting the fullness of his humanity! Jesus was human. Jesus had nocturnal emissions. While I don’t want to spend much time speculating on the contents of any divine dreams, I think affirmation of the fullness of Jesus’ humanity is what helps us affirm the fullness of our own humanity.   Amen. Read more

Before Jesus died, Jesus was the way. If Jesus hadn’t died, Jesus would still be the way. In the midst of his anguish, Jesus chose to die to show us the way. Could Jesus have shown us the way in another way? I think so. No matter what he chose to do, Jesus was and is the way. Jesus didn’t have to die. Jesus did die.   Amen. Read more
