Dugout Wisdom

Casey Stengel was once asked about his own successfulness. Here’s his response:

“I haven’t always been this lucky. Back in the Depression days, somebody suggested I invest in a turkey farm. I didn’t do it. A little later, President Roosevelt declared two Thanksgivings. Just think — I could have sold twice as many turkeys.
Then I looked for some other business investment. ‘Everybody’s got to have window shades,’ I said. So bought a shade factory. Then some Italian guy invents Venetian blinds, and I go busted.”
Reminiscing much later, Casey said: “I was such a dangerous hitter I even got intentional walks during batting practice.”
