Yesterday I extended to Air1 DJ JB (quick: say “DJJB” three times real fast—wait, don’t: I just bit my tongue trying) an offer to respond, via a guest post here on my blog, to yesterday’s “Why Would I Rather Listen to Belching Throat Singers Than Contemporary Christian Music?” Once he read through the comments to that post, he took me up on that offer. Take it away, DJ JB! Dear haters readers of John Shore’s blog: (more…) Read more

[Update: Christian Music DJ, JB, Responds: “Dear Haters …”] So it’s 3:30 a.m., and I’m at my desk wondering why I’m at my desk when I should be in bed next to my warm, snoozing wife. I swear, that girl sleeps like an elderly zombie on quaaludes. And it doesn’t matter how freaked she is from anything going on at her job, or anything like that. She’ll be, like, “Someone at work today pulled out a gun and started shooting at... Read more

I am entirely confident that God is perfectly okay with me cursing whenever I find it entirely appropriate to do so. The key phrase there is “whenever I find it appropriate to do so.” I don’t often find it appropriate to curse. I rarely employ such language in what I write, for instance, because I know a lot of youngerish people read my stuff, and it’s bad enough how often I make up words like youngerish without having to compound... Read more

As you’ve likely heard, renowned author of novels about vampires Anne Rice has boldly declared that she is no longer a Christian. On her Facebook page yesterday she wrote, Today I quit being a Christian. I’m out. I remain committed to Christ as always but not to being “Christian” or to being part of Christianity. It’s simply impossible for me to “belong” to this quarrelsome, hostile, disputatious, and deservedly infamous group. For ten years, I’ve tried. I’ve failed. I’m an... Read more

I’m against abortion. So are you. So is everyone. Who doesn’t like babies? The reason I’m against abortion has nothing to do with the fact that I’m a Christian, and everything to do with the fact that I’m a human. Everyone thinks abortion is an terrible option. Everyone wishes no one ever felt compelled to undergo such a traumatic procedure. No one ever cavalierly decides to get an abortion. No one thinks of it as just another form of birth... Read more

(More material I’ve written for my aborning book, All In … Almost.) I was twenty-three years old [when I got married]. As I write this, I am either fifty-one or fifty-two. (Maybe this will be the momentary uncertainty that for once in my life compells me to do some math! Maybe not.) As anyone who has ever been married engaged in a relationship gone on a date alive knows, committed romantic relationships are so complex that today many relationship experts... Read more

This is the Actual Conversation had by my wife Catherine and I on the morning of August 17, 1981, the day after we got married (at nine o’clock in the morning in the Shakespeare Garden in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park). Before getting married Cat and I lived together for some two-and-a-half years. “I didn’t think I’d feel so different after we got married,” I said. “Do you feel different?” “I really do.” I was sitting with my back against the... Read more

With regards to “My Parents Say I Should Worry About Making More Money Than My Perfect Boyfriend. Advice?”, here’s my two cents–which, when adjusted for inflation, means– Hey! Just now “Berkshire” sent in our young questioner this answer, which I think so good I’m disinclined to add anything to it. A lot of your answers were, I thought, extremely good. I think this one is especially comprehensive and extremely well-grounded; I think it caught the best of what others of... Read more
