From my latest for The Tidings, the newspaper of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, via the online version, Angelus News … “Greater love than this no man hath, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” — John 15:13 Thanks to advances in medicine, many military members who may once have made this ultimate sacrifice for country on the battlefield now may bear wounds — both visible and invisible — but survive. We make a great show of... Read more

The host of CBS’ “The Late, Late Show With James Corden” sent his very British folks, who know nothing about American football, to meet with the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Buffalo Bills in advance of their recent game at London’s Wembley Stadium, part of the NFL’s International Series of games at the venue. The other night, I went to a screening of the new movie “Spotlight,” which details the investigation by the Boston Globe’s Spotlight team into the priest sex-abuse scandal and cover-up in Boston, first published in January 2002. Aside from a couple of pointed efforts to deflect the conversation away from whatever role homosexuality played in this – not surprising, considering our current political climate – the film, which opens in selected theaters on Friday, Nov. 6, was clear-eyed, not sensationalistic,... Read more

Based on the Vertigo comic-book franchise by Northern-Irish-born Garth Ennis (with artist Steve Dillon), “Preacher” proves once again that Hollywood may dump on believers all the time, but it just can’t stop talking about God. From AMC: Preacher is the story of Jesse Custer (Dominic Cooper, Agent Carter), a conflicted preacher in a small... Read more
