At his Wednesday General Audience today in St. Peter’s Square, Pope Francis set aside his planned remarks and delivered an off-the-cuff apology. “Before beginning my catechesis,” he said, “…I would like–in the name of the Church–to ask your forgiveness for the scandals which have occurred recently, both in Rome and at the Vatican.” To what scandals, exactly, was he referring? Most certainly, he was inspired to apologize by the reading of the day, drawn from the readings of the day–from Romans 2,... Read more

Well, it’s been an interesting week for Synod-watchers! In what John Allen has wryly called “letter-gate”, Australian Cardinal George Pell reportedly hand-delivered a letter to Pope Francis on October 5, detailing concerns about the structure of the Synod. According to Allen, who relied on a report from veteran Vaticanista Sandro Magister, the letter raised three major objections: Bishops taking part in the synod will not be asked to vote on individual propositions, raising concerns about whether the pope will get... Read more

Today, October 12, is Columbus Day. Except for the fact that the mail didn’t come, I hardly noticed. In the 1950s, Columbus Day was a pretty big deal in America: Flags waved, offices were closed, parades marched down Main Streets in countless small towns, and schoolchildren learned about the hero explorer whose fleet–the Niña, the Pinta and the Santa Maria–made landfall in the Americas in 1492. After the Fourth of July, October 12 was our nation’s second birthday celebration– because it was... Read more

On Saturday, October 10, anti-Islam protesters are planning to rally in 20 cities across America. The organizers, a hate group called “Global Rally for Humanity,” have encouraged protesters to bring guns. An ominous warning appears on the Michigan group’s Facebook page: “Farrakhan’s anti-American hate rally in DC is only going to be the tip of the iceberg on 10/10/15. Join us and rally up in resistance across the USA!!!” The protest group had originally planned to hold their event in front... Read more

Planned Parenthood of Michigan has admitted that they harvested fetal tissue in the past, although Lori Carpentier, President and CEO of Planned Parenthood of Mid and South Michigan, says it’s not going on any longer. The disclosure came during a discussion on WKAR, the PBS affiliate at Michigan State University.  The station’s news show “Current State” welcomed Carpentier and Genevieve Marnon, public affairs associate at Right to Life of Michigan, to discuss the current controversy involving Planned Parenthood’s alleged sale... Read more

This week, the legal team who represented two Hazel Park nurses in their successful challenge of Michigan’s ban on same-sex marriage will receive the final payment toward $1.9 million in legal costs and fees–a cost which will be borne by the state’s taxpayers. In June 2015, the U.S. Supreme Court in Obergefell v. Hodges overturned state-level bans on same-sex marriage, including Michigan’s 2004 voter-approved gay marriage ban. Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette had vigorously defended the ban. The high court ruling paved... Read more

Breaking news tonight from my friends at the Thomas More Society. There has been a resolution to the conflicting demands regarding the Center for Medical Progress’s undercover investigation into the National Abortion Federation and Planned Parenthood. The court has ruled that ALL of the unedited footage can be turned over to Congress, in response to their subpoena. Here is their press release, with full information: Court Rules that Congress Can Receive Full Unedited Footage of Undercover Investigation into National Abortion... Read more

Back when dinosaurs roamed the Earth, I studied Sociology at the University of Michigan. As a young 20-something woman, I was unsure what career field I should choose and so, like many young people still today, I spun the wheel. I was interested in why people did the things they did–so Sociology and, at U-M, its counterpart Social Psychology seemed the perfect field of study. Under the tutelage of some great profs and their sometimes-great laboratory assistants, I learned about... Read more

As the city slept, workers removed the Ten Commandments monument from its place in front of the Oklahoma State Capitol.  Just in case there were violent Christians out there who might defend their sacred laws with guns or knives, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol provided extra security guards and erected barriers to keep people from coming close during the removal. The two-ton monument was uninstalled without incident and carried a few blocks away to the Oklahoma Council of Public Affairs, where it... Read more
