Samhain is a time for remembering the departed, including those who lived in our homes and on our land before us. Many of the dead carried pain with them when they left this life, but often they also leave it behind in this material world. Healing these ancestors of place provides all those involved with peace. Read more

While her earthly birth place may never be known, Hekate’s origin story tells of her creation and powers. Written by Hesiod almost three thousand years ago, he enthusiastically details her governance over land, sea and sky while gushing about her ability to provide bounty. The veracity of Hesiod’s claims has often been debated over the past century. Some authors posit that his story didn’t reflect the common understanding of the times. Even that his family was somehow different in their understanding of Hekate. I like to think that they were. Then there are those academics who claim that it may not have even been Hesiod that wrote Hekate’s origin story into his Theogony; that it is an early example of copying and pasting by a different writer.  Read more

If there was ever a sabbat for realness, it’s got to be Samhain. The emotional intensity of this time of the year brings forward so many things from the other side, including those zombies in our heads. These zombies reach out from across the veil, hungry for parts of our souls. No, Samhain, is not all fun and games, it’s the time when many of us have to deal with the dead and incredible emotional intensity. Samhain can suck for those with zombies to deal with, bringing distress, grief, anxiety and depression.  Read more

Brilliant at hiding their true evil, psychopaths walk among us in the pagan and witch worlds, inflicting harm wherever they go. Typically leaders, they wear the robes of leadership to disguise their evil nature. The way to protect ourselves is to know the signs before it’s too late.  Read more

Hekate and Samhain should go together, but most mainstream practices don’t include her. However, three of her roles – as Queen of Witches, Necromancer and her ancient connection to the harvest – are highly appropriate to this day. I offer my reasons as to why Hekate has been ignored on Samhain and recommend ways to include her during the Witches’ New Year. Read more

If there is one type of question about Hekate I get asked more than others it’s about her name. Like every aspect of my favorite goddess, her name has a fascinating and intricate history. From her origins to how we say her name today, there’s loads of intrigue, but few certain answers, to be found. Read more

I love the power that the #metoo movement is bringing to trauma warriors. The righteous anger we feel propels us towards healing. While calling out the predators who perpetrated the abuse is vital, sharing our stories is complex for the one doing the truth-telling and those bearing witness. In particular, others who have experienced similar trauma may be triggered. Being silent is not an option. Speaking out is the only way forward. How we navigate our rage, healing and best support others is a subject very much on my mind these days. I know it is for many of you, too. Read more

The glorious Season of The Witch is here. October is the month when the thinning veil, stockpiles of herbs and longer nights signals the return of Hekate as The Queen of the Witches. Casting spells, working with poisons and summoning spirits are all very Hekatean ways to tap into the energy of October.  October, my favorite month, is here at last. Modern Halloween and Samhain celebrations are wonderful, but they often omit the Queen of Witchcraft herself, Hekate. While she may not be an overt part of the festivities, her energy runs throughout the month, especially for those of us living where it’s dark, damp and chilly.  Read more
