Super Heroes Never Die (The Lesson We Never Learn)

Super Heroes Never Die (The Lesson We Never Learn) March 15, 2015

SM

It’s three o’clock in the morning and I just finished a song. Every album process for me is the same for over twenty years. Every time I plan to start working, I’m filled with fear and doubt. I fear that my God-given songwriting abilty will run out this time. Just like a carton of milk, the last drop will come eventually.

God doesn’t have anymore songs for you. It’s over. You can’t keep doing it. It has to come to an end at some point.

These thoughts, whispered into my soul, lodge there, and I expect them to come true.

Here’s the problem, family: this “voice” comes before EVERY album! And even though some of the most beautiful lyrics and melodies have spilled onto the paper over and over again, I’m still vulnerable to the lie; even though wonderful fingerprints of God’s love are evident on each record, I’m still a victim to the fear; even though I’ve seen how the story ends time after time, I still hear the voice.

It reminds me of super hero movies. You’d think by now people would stop spending their money for stories for which they already know the ending. No matter the name of the hero — Batman, Ironman, Superman – the death of a beloved “savior of the galaxy” just doesn’t appear on screen.

But every summer, we will stand in line, buy the jumbo size of popcorn and see originals, sequels, spin offs and remakes of characters that embody the end of the story before it starts. No matter how dark the situation gets… no matter how many people are without hope… no matter how bad our knight in shining armor is beaten, bruised and left for dead…  no matter how much we scream, cry, grab the arm next to us [I do that often]… we’re never disappointed.  This is what happens. Every time.

Just when it seems the end is hopeless, that evil has ultimately conquered good, there’s a rumble.. a spark of fire… a shaking of the earth… a scream that can deafen the loudest sound of despair… a bird, a plane, a super hero has trampled doubt and has risen to give every ticket holder in the theatre the victory.

No matter how many times the same story is told with different characters, we always have the same fear: this is it.  This is the movie in which the good guy doesn’t win.

How many times does God have to be good to you for you to know He IS good?

Being good to you is in His DNA.

The storm you’re in now is not your first storm and it’s not His first storm either. You’ve been here before… wondering how this is going to end for your business, your life, your dreams.

The “voice” creates spiritual amnesia and tempts you to forget the track record of God.

See, God always comes through at the right time for you.  No matter how many different waves there may be, it’s the same storm. You know how it starts, and you know how it ends. You’ve seen God ride the waves before.. but doubt tries and erase every bit of divine evidence from the scene of your past miracles. Even though the pattern of God is to sometimes wait until the very last minute – sometimes only for the purpose to build your faith — it just “feels” like this is the one that will take you out…

The earth trembles.. the ground shakes from the power of deliverance knocking on your door.. and again — like He’s done so many other times – it’s just in the knick of time.

He does what you should expect Him to do by now.

Save your day.

He’s more than a super hero and — after this victory — there WILL be a sequel.

Just don’t forget who wins!
