Today, I learned of this article at the Huffington Post with the blaring headline: North Dakota Senate Race: Bismarck Bishop David Kagan Said To Write Letter To Influence Voters If you read the article you’ll find it detailing Diocese of Bismarck Bishop David Kagan’s embargoed letter to the faithful of his diocese instructing them to vote according to their well-formed consciences.  Bishop Kagan is also currently serving as apostolic administrator of Fargo. The HuffPo piece details a few snippets of the letter but... Read more

Today, I read with great excitement Bishop Gerald F. Kincanis’ amazing blog post for Catholic News Service detailing the 57 propositions being put forward for consideration by the Synod Fathers. I have a few favorites among his summarizations, including: The role of social communication is important in handing on the faith. The primary mode of evangelization is personal witness,  yet education in the wise and constructive use of social media is an important means to be utilized in the new... Read more

Sorry friends, I hope you’ll pardon a little Monday morning rant (yes, it’s still morning out here for another seven minutes)… Monday is sort of a “catch up” day for me. One of my weekly to-do items is to review the Facebook friend requests I’ve received for the past several days. I find I enjoy doing that all at once rather than sporadically throughout the week. And honestly, for the past few weeks I’ve been trying to recapture my use... Read more

It feels fitting that today, the day after Pope Benedict XVI canonized seven new saints for a Church so greatly in need of heroic role models, we are celebrating the life of Blessed John Paul II. Yesterday, Pope Benedict XVI presided over the Rite of Canonization and Eucharistic Celebration in honor of: James Berthieu Pedro Calungsod John Baptist Piamarta Carmen Sallés y Barangueras Marianne Cope Kateri Tekakwitha Anna Schäffer If your Italian is current, you might enjoy perusing this booklet... Read more

This afternoon, I’m at Panera with my son Adam. Our Sunday afternoon “Panera dates” have become a tradition this year as we work through Adam’s college application process. Despite my fear of sounding like a commercial for Panera, I must say that the combination of plentiful electrical outlets, free caffeine refills, wifi and an out of the way “nook” of booths has combined to make our local bakery the perfect place for both of us to get stuff done. And... Read more

As you read this, I’m on the road with my 18 year old high school senior Adam. We’re headed to the coast for the day to attend a college admissions event at UC Santa Cruz. The home of the Banana Slugs is honestly not high on either of our lists, but a road trip to one of Adam’s “safety schools” and a visit to a city we haven’t really seen before sounded like a fun way to spend the day.... Read more

In my head, I keep going back to a small portion of the blog post from Bishop Kicanis that I shared with you yesterday: A challenge for the synod fathers is to understand how we might better catechize the people, deepen their knowledge of the faith and their understanding of what it means to be a disciple of Christ. All of us struggle with this challenge. So few people take part in adult faith formation. We have so little time... Read more

Those sighs you hear resonating across the country from devoted listeners of Sirius XM’s The Catholic Channel are a reaction to today’s big news that tomorrow will be the last episode of the channel’s popular show The Catholics Next Door. Listeners will be tuning in one last time tomorrow to hear co-hosts Greg and Jennifer Willits enjoy a last few hours of what’s been billed as the “world’s first Catholic reality show”. As a fan of the show and a... Read more

During the Synod on the New Evangelization, I’ve been greatly enjoying the frequent newsy blog posts from Tucson Bishop Gerald F. Kicanas. His “Inside the Synod” reports give us a true look into the important work being undertaken at the outset of the Year of Faith. Yesterday’s missive was no exception. One particular section hit me with great impact: In our Diocese of Tucson as in so many dioceses, most Catholics are at best Sunday observers. They do not bring... Read more

Disclaimer: I can’t answer my own question… at least not yet. Last night, I watched the “pre-debate warm ups” on a variety of channels before jumping in my car and heading to a local parish to give a talk to an assembled group on the topic of Advent. We’ll talk later about how ironic it felt to be discussing my favorite liturgical season when the thermometer here in Fresno read 85 degrees… I had every intention of finishing up, jumping... Read more
