I am posting this story of St. Patrick on March 16, the day before St. Patrick’s Day. I’ll leave it up through the 17th as a tribute to the real St. Patrick, a man whose name is familiar but whose amazing story is not well known. In my youth, St. Patrick’s Day was most of all a day to wear green. Be caught without green and you got pinched by your friends, maybe even your teacher. (That was a long... Read more

A couple of days ago, I put up a review of Blue Like Jazz, the movie. Since then, I’ve received quite a few comments or emails from people who love the book Blue Like Jazz and are concerned about whether or not they’ll like the movie or not. They have every right to be concerned, in my opinion. Like most people, I have had the experience of loving a book and being eager to see the movie version, only to... Read more

Part 7 of series: Thin Places In my last post in this series, I suggested that the Temple in Jerusalem was the paradigmatic thin place in the Old Testament. The Temple was considered God’s house, metaphorically speaking, the chief place in which his presence lived on earth. Unlike the Tabernacle, the Temple existed in one place, a place to which thousands of Jews made pilgrimage each year so they might experience God in a deeper way. Last night, I saw the Austin premiere of Blue Like Jazz, the movie based on Donald Miller’s book of the same title. It will be in theaters beginning on April 13. The film was an official selection of the South by Southwest Film Festival and it was shown in the Paramount theater, one of SXSW’s larger venues. The theater was quite full and the audience, judging from their laughter and applause, thoroughly enjoyed the movie. If you’re a fan of... Read more

My series on Thin Places is now available. As you probably know, it is a work in process. But if you want to read what I’ve written about thin places in logical/chronological order, this is the place to do it. Also, if you want to link to my writing on thin places, you might link to the series. When I’m done writing on this topic, the series will contain all of what I’ve written in a user-friendly format. This thin... Read more

Part 6 of series: Thin Places After God established the Tabernacle as “sanctuary” for the Israelites so that he might “dwell in their midst” (Exod 25:8), he continued to “camp” among his people in a temporary, portable dwelling. Many generations passed. Finally, David became the king of God’s people and centered his kingdom in Jerusalem. One day it dawned on David that he lived in a luxurious palace while the Lord only had a tent. So David resolved to build... Read more
