by Michael Pearl from No Greater Joy β Self Control
Editorβs note: βPleasure junkieβ? βHippieβ? It sounds like someone is projecting awful hard here onto an innocent kid that is expressing frustration in one of the few way open to a small child.Β That last little slap at teenagers that like to hang out at the mall is ridiculous, many kids go through that phase and arenβt βaddictsβ like Michael is claiming, moving on to live productive good lives. So much so wrong in this small bit.
His flesh will get a three or four year headstart on the development of his sense of duty. He is born with a wanter but no stopper β with a gas peddle but no brake. At age three or four he will already be a confirmed βpleasure junkieβ, a βdo as I please rebelβ, an βif it feels good do it hippieβ, a βnobody tells me what to do politicianβ, a spoiled brat. With intemperate habits already well formed, he is not going to appreciate the call of his newly developing conscience toward self-restraint. Nor will he appreciate anyone else trying to impose limitations on his addiction to indulgence.
In the extraordinary ignorance of modern psychology we are told that the child should be left to his own free expressions, that we must be careful not to suppress his personality. What will you do when his free expressions are antisocial, when his behavior is disgusting and embarrassing? Will you call it modern art, and appreciate it for its original departure from the prudent? To allow βfree expressionβ is to allow the child the freedom to be in bondage to appetite and carnal desire. If you lovingly provide everything a child needs, but fail to cross his will with enforced boundaries, you will by default produce a self-centered, carnally minded, emotionally disturbed, and, at the best, an average member of the group hanging out at the mall.
QUOTING QUIVERFULL is a regular feature of NLQ β we present the actual words of noted Quiverfull leaders, cultural enforcers and those that seek to keep women submitted to men and ask our readers: What do you think? Agree? Disagree? This is the place to state your opinion. Please, letβs keep it respectful β but at the same time, we encourage readers to examine the ideas of Quiverfull and Spiritual Abuse honestly and thoughtfully.
