NLQ Question of the Week: Are Men in QF Naturally Inclined Towards Abuse? March 9, 2017

QuestionoftheweekThis is a series we run every Thursday. The questions are things that people who may not know much about the Quiverfull movement or even Fundamentalist or Evangelical Christianity ask about the lifestyle. Examining some of the questions involving Quiverfull theology and life can only shine a light on the toxic nature of this lifestyle choice.

A question popped up this week after a discussion with a friend. For years now whenever NLQ gets negative comments in the comment section or on the Facebook page if it’s not a Duggar defender then it’s a man. A fundamentalist or evangelical Christian man who starts out telling how righteous he is or makes some reference to their faith and immediately starts cursing, threatening and bashing all the women at NLQ. Almost always this is the way the negative comments run.

I got up the other morning and found that another fundamentalist man had put a comment telling me to fornicate with myself and accusing me of making up β€˜fake news’ because I’d quoted the words of pastor Tim Bayly. This was when Bayly was going nuts on the theme of the internet causing huge problems with incest in big Quiverfull families. Bayly’s own quoted words were in this man’s mind my invention. My mind, while sometimes in the gutter, simply does not dip that low. My personal powers of imagination aren’t that strong.

Here’s where the question comes in. I was discussing it with an NLQ regular why it was that these ugly male commenters using abusive language were always supposedly great patriarchs and she pointed out that abusive men are what are the most drawn to this type of theology. I’ve been thinking about that a great deal this week after moving his remarks to the Jerks4Jesus page. Are men who are already abusive drawn to Quiverfull theology, or does the abusive nature develop the longer they are enmeshed in it? What do you think?
