We all know how the Pearls think you should handle a toddlerβs tantrum, by beating them until they stop crying. But we donβt talk about better ways to handle those things here very much and we really should.
This video clip at the bottom of the post from the Seth Meyers talk show with Drew Barrymore had a segment where Drew spoke of dealing with epic meltdowns and tantrums in children without resorting to anything even remotely like a plumbing line.
In an article on Simplemost.com hereβs what Alan Kazdin, author of βThe Kazdin Method For Parenting the Defiant Childβ had to say about tantrums along with Barrymoreβs stories.
1. Ignore Them
βOnce youβre in a situation where someoneβs drowning, you canβt teach them to swimβand itβs the same with tantrums. Thereβs nothing to do in the moment that will make things better. In fact, almost anything you try will make it worse. Once he chills out, then you can talk,β he said.
2. Redirect
Most moms have a handful of bizarre, yet useful junkΒ in their purse. When your kid is throwing a tantrum try distracting with a snack or mini-figure you find in your grab bag. Or, even point at something interesting in the distance. βHey, look is that a bird?β
There are a few more suggestions in the article as well as some funny photos of Barrymore ignoring a child having a tantrum on the second page. What do you do to turn off the tantrums?
Hereβs a video of what Barrymore said of dealing with her children on a recent trip to Disneyworld.
