No Longer Quivering
After our discussions in the comments here the other day I decided to look up and refresh my memory of the ‘James Dobson beats a dog story’ so I went a Googling. Found a James Dobson commits animal abuse and advocates abusing children the same way article from the Huffington Post. Which is a good thing because my copy of his book ‘The Strong-Willed Child’ is in a 20 foot shipping container somewhere out along the East Coast of the US or Caribbean in a cargo ship slowly chugging its way to my home in Costa Rica. No public library here and I’m pretty sure the only bookstore in town does not have a copy. Not the kind of material the nice old former hippie who owns the place would stock.
The book bears discussion after this committing a crime in most jurisdictions story comes out. I had zero memory of seeing this story about a Dachshund named Sigmund Freud.
Years before I’d devoured Focus on the Family’s book by James Dobson because my youngest child was extremely strong-willed. While I rejected out of hand Dobson’s advice on laying on the switch because my daughter had a bleeding disorder, I remember thinking that much of the book was good, at least the parts explaining the mind of a strong-willed child. I can see I’m going to have to reread the book and do a review here at No Longer Quivering. I must have been completely drinking that fundamentalist koolaid hard to come up with the idea that the book was excellent parenting advice. Every snippet I’ve seen since leaving my old faith community is pretty horrifying, especially this bit:
I. Just can’t!!
He beat a tiny animal he outweighed almost twenty times!
