During this time of fear and uncertainty in the COVID-19 wilderness, I’ve decided to do something a little different. I’m going to be daily using my blog to share texts and videos of hymns that pass along hope and comfort until the restrictions are lifted, and we can worship in our buildings once again. I hope you find them to be encouraging and edifying during this time. Take care, everyone. Wash your hands. And keep the faith. Today’s hymn is... Read more

I get some pretty weird targeted ads on Facebook. Today, I was introduced, over and over and over again, to a church architectural firm and their series of ads for modern church plans. I should’ve just ignored it the first time. I should’ve known better than to click on it and teach Facebook to show me more of this kind of stuff. I didn’t. I took the bait and clicked. Their ads were very elaborate and, honestly, quick well done.... Read more

A man in attendance at one of his concerts told Mullins afterward that he had really felt the Spirit on one particular song, especially right before the last chorus. “That wasn’t the Spirit,” said Mullins. “That was where the kick drum came in.” If you’ve been to a pop worship “experience” recently,... Read more

Seriously, folks, if your church is doing “Good, Good Father” tomorrow, you need a new church. You really do. You really do. You really do. Never mind that Father’s Day shouldn’t intrude on the church. Jesus made that clear enough by saying “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?” comment. But this song is a crappy, crappy song. That’s what it is. And if it weren’t for evangelical Christianity’s obsession with warm fuzzy pseudo worship, it would’ve gone... Read more

Note: I am not suggesting a return to congregational singing until scientific consensus states that it is safe. This is not about singing. Rather, many churches are removing hymnals, but projecting hymn texts as they are sung or played by musicians. Seriously, don’t get rid of your hymnals. You don’t need to get rid of your hymnals to protect from the COVID-19 virus. At least not entirely. But first, let’s talk about why hymnals are important to keep around, even... Read more
