Police Release Tape of 911 Call in Priest Shooting

Police Release Tape of 911 Call in Priest Shooting June 17, 2014

This is hard to listen to. I didn’t make it through the first time. However, it reveals what a brave man Father Joseph Terra is. I’m posting it for that reason.

It’s the 911 call Father Terra made after the shooting death of Father Kenneth Walker at the rectory they shared. Father Terra was critically injured himself.

Public Catholic reader Ken noted in a comment, and I’ve read myself that Father Terra gave last rites to Father Walker at that scene. It is quite clear from listening to this tape that Father Terra was pushing himself heroically to answer the responder’s questions and do what she asked. I do not know how he managed to give Father Walker CPR, considering how injured he was himself.

After listening to this tape, I just wanted to hug him.

From ABC 15 Arizona:

PHOENIX – Phoenix police have released the 911 call made just moments after a Valley priest was murdered Wednesday night .

Investigators are still searching for solid leads after Rev. Kenneth Walker was killed and Rev. Joseph Terra was critically injured at a Roman Catholic church in a gritty stretch of downtown Phoenix.

Terra called 911 around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday and administered last rites to the wounded Walker while waiting for police to arrive.

  1. These 911 people should, from the get go, assure the caller that an ambulance is on the way. I cannot listen to their transactions. I had to shut it off. The priest sounded like he was dying and she’s asking him how the robber entered the building. To what purpose? I had a breakin two years ago, tracked the guy from the house and nearly killed him in a street fight but I’m big and my workouts include ten straight minutes of fast boxing combinations to Rolling Stones music. Try it. Ten minutes straight. I’m a little too ready as it were. Police came much later and absolved me from going too far but God wasn’t so nice in ensuing months. Kill to defend if necessary…not for physical goods…was the general message. Fr. Terra deserves a new neighborhood. He’s going to have post traumatic stress disorder since he had a pistol in his night stand and it killed his friend by the criminal using it during the struggle. Permanent regret syndrome therein on top of new fear level. If he’s going to stay there, he needs an alarm system and the pistol on his belt. Otherwise, he needs a change of address.
    Two wonderful priests.

  2. You can pray for the perp and I did so but God might still choose to destroy him per the New Testament… I Cor. 3: 16-17
“Do you not know that you are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?
If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy that person; for the temple of God, which you are, is holy.”

  3. He called 911 — it seems pretty normal procedure. Heroics? Its painful listening to the 991 operator.
