I never forget that I live in a house that belongs to all the American people and I have been given their trust. Franklin Delano Roosevelt
I don’t think I’ve ever had any public figure do anything that has made me as angry as the photos I saw yesterday of the White House being torn down.
I’m too angry to talk about it. Here are a few points for us to consider, going forward.
- The White House — and America itself — do not belong to any president. We elect these men and when we do it, we give them the privilege of living in our house for the time they are in office. But they are our guests in our house while they are living there.
- No president owns the White House. I own it. You own it. No president has the right to sell it and pocket the money, steal its furnishings or tear it down.
- The British tried to burn our White House down during the War of 1812. They damaged it, but they did not succeed in destroying it. We the People have cared for and cherished the White House for almost 250 years. It is one of the symbols of our country, of our freedom, of our America. It belongs to us.
- Nobody, nowhere, asked Trump to build a ballroom. Of all the things on our wish list for our country, I have never heard a single person except for the Mad King himself say that what we really need is a gaudy, gold-plated ballroom that will seat 1,000 people.
- Trump said in public and in front of the press that he was not going to damage the existing White House with his vanity building project. He lied.
- Trump said this thing would cost $200 million dollars. He lied.
- Now, he’s saying it will cost $300 million. I’m betting that’s another lie.
- Trump says he’s going to help pay for the project. I have no facts about that, but I would bet the ranch that it’s another one of his lies. Trump is famous for not paying his bills and cheating the people who do work for him. Michael Cohen, who was once Trump’s attorney and his enforcer, said in his book that Trump wouldn’t pay ordinary workmen. He cheated them out of their money. These roofers, plumbers and mechanics were like us; they didn’t have the money to fight Trump in court.
- I do not have any facts. But I do not believe for one minute that Trump will ever put one dime of his own money into this. Again, I do not have any facts, but I am guessing that he’ll end up pocketing some grift off of it.
- Republicans in Congress will do nothing to stop this. They did nothing to stop this. They will lie and confabulate and accuse and hiss and spit to keep from holding Trump accountable for tearing down our house.
- Trump could and should be impeached for tearing down the White House just because he decided he wanted to do it. Congresses of the past, including the Republicans, would have already been at work on it. But the Republicans in Congress today are just like the Congresspeople in that video Trump put out last weekend, crawling on the floor in front of him, and bowing to him.
- I want a list of the billionaires who gave Trump money to tear down the White House. I want to see it.
I’m going to stop here. Anybody can see that what Trump is doing to the White House, he’s also doing to America. He’s treating it like his personal thing that he owns and can do anything to that he wants. And what he wants is to tear it down and turn it into a cheap, gaudy memorial to himself.
We elected this sadistic, corrupt old liar. And boy, did we make a mistake.
