FX is airing a documentary called AKA Roe. In this documentary, Norma McCorvey, the “Roe” in Roe v Wade, gives what she terms her “deathbed confession.” Like just about everything else she did in her life, Norma McCorvey’s deathbed confession is a doozy. You may remember that Ms McCorvey originally told Sarah Weddington, one of the attorneys who took Roe v Wade to the Supreme Court, that she was pregnant as a result of rape. McCorvey later recanted that story,... Read more

I oppose legal abortion because abortion kills a human being.  That is the only reason I oppose it.  On the other hand, I am acutely aware that the pregnant girl is also a human being. I know that the forces of misogyny, including rape, the sexual double standard and the pervasive discrimination against women and girls in all areas of life are why abortion is regarded as necessary by so many people.  I believe absolutely that these vicious sins against... Read more

My precious mother died a few weeks ago after a heroic battle with dementia. I say that her battle was heroic because she fought against her limitations as best she could right up to the end. I walked beside her all the long way down. She never stopped being the loving, good, decent and brave woman she had always been.  The nurses loved her. The other patients coddled her. And I adored her with all my heart.  Dementia is a... Read more

The Archdiocese of Oklahoma City, my diocese, is beginning public mass again today. They will also continue to offer mass online for those who are unable to be there physically. I know that this is happening all around the country, and not just here in my diocese. Let’s all pray for the safety of our priests, many of whom are elderly men, as they begin the risky business of providing the sacraments in this time of COVID-19. I pray that... Read more

In this time of COVID, when so much is uncertain and death is all around us, the Stations of the Cross is there to take us back to the reality of our faith. We do not serve an earthly king. Our Lord is no titan who strides across empires dragging a sword and trailed by broken conquered people. Our God is a God Who knows everything there is to know about suffering … and about human weakness and sin. The... Read more

Today marks the 40th anniversary of the Sampul River Massacre in El Salvador. The Sampul River Massacre was a mass murder of innocent people by right-wing Salvadoran troops. Six hundred children, housewives, little old ladies and ordinary working men trying to support their families were slaughtered. This occurred about the same time that St Oscar Romero, a Catholic bishop, was shot down by government assassins while he was saying mass. St Oscar Romero was murdered for the same reasons that... Read more

I was “lucky.” A mammogram caught my cancer long before it was big enough to feel by touch. After the mastectomy, we learned that there was other cancer that didn’t show on the scans, waiting to go off some time in the future. Cancer, even relatively mild cancers, turn deadly when they move out of the box. One in 8 American women will have breast cancer at some point in their lives. I am one of the 8. This video... Read more

Which is lawful on the Sabbath; to do good or to do evil, to save life or to kill? Jesus Christ  Catholic Churches here in Oklahoma will be re-opening for mass soon. Meanwhile, at least some bishops around the country are allowing communion-on-the-tongue. I think that most active Catholics are aware that we are not required to attend Sunday mass if we have health reasons to stay home. I’m not a bishop, but I am personally interpreting that to mean... Read more
