Bernie Sanders’ campaign seems to be picking up momentum. Before I go on, let me say that Bernie isn’t my first choice among the Democrats, but I’m not scared of him like a lot of people are. Sanders is certainly a polarizing figure, even among Democrats and especially among Christians. Sanders’ biggest support base seems to be the younger voters. I think it’s great that he has captured the imaginations of a generation of young adults who otherwise tend… Read more

Believe me, I’m as guilty as anyone on either side of our current civil war of getting completely transfixed with doing my part to win it. It just kind of comes with the territory of caring about your country, I guess. We are all concerned with the question; who will win the war? But from time to time, I touch base with another question that is at least as important, if not the most important: Who’s going to win the… Read more

On any given day, I probably get asked at least once or twice, “how are you?” My answer is always the same, and it is an automatic response, “I’m doin’ ok.” I must confess, for quite a while now, my response has been a lie. I’m not ok. I’m pretty damn far from ok, actually. I’m not lying on purpose. Saying “I’m doin’ ok” is as involuntary as a heartbeat or taking a breath, it just comes out as a… Read more

It was all over my social media feed last night. I saw dozens of conservative Christians up in arms about the sexually suggestive nature of the halftime performances of Shakira and J.Lo. I saw the halftime show and, in my opinion, it was fairly tame. Yes, the singers and the dancers wore skimpy outfits and yes, the dances were, at times, somewhat suggestive. However, none of it was over-the-top. It was no different than a performance you might see on… Read more

It’s been a weird week in conservative Christendom. We saw pastor Rodney Howard-Browne step up and claim that Jesus Christ would take a whip and “beat the crap out of” former National Security Advisor John Bolton for blowing the whistle on the president. We’ve seen Pastor Howard-Browne before; he was one of those who gathered in the Oval Office for the beautifully awkward photo-op where all the spiritual leaders laid hands on the president in prayer. Howard-Browne’s insistence showed very… Read more

When asked about my stance on abortion as a Progressive Christian, my general response is that I’m an anti-abortion/pro-choicer. Perhaps that’s cheating a little, but I think it’s a crucial distinction that too often gets disregarded in the heated political arguments about the subject. I hate abortion. I don’t know anyone who likes abortion. I think we all wish nobody ever had to face that decision. But we can’t change the real world. The matter comes down to whether we… Read more

A good friend of mine shared a Martin Luther King Jr. quote on his Facebook page today. It’s one of my favorites and it perfectly dovetails with what’s been on my mind the last couple days. Here is that quote: “History will have to record that the greatest tragedy of this period of social transition was not the strident clamor of the bad people, but the appalling silence of the good people.” -Martin Luther King Jr.  Dr. King made that… Read more

I think I’ve finally reached a tipping point. I’ve been trying to find ways to reconcile my convictions about what it means to be a Christian with the kinds of political policies I’ve seen my more conservative Christian friends supporting for the last three years and I’m growing quite weary of it. It is an exercise in frustration and a pathway to depression. How could we have drifted so far apart in our understanding of the example Christ left for… Read more

Two Little Boys By: Shane Phipps   Two little boys were born one day Back in June of ‘98 One in Iran, one in Utah Proudest dads you ever saw When John was born you’d never know Oh, the places he would go And Reza’s mom could not foresee Just what he’d turn out to be They grew up half a world away But could not keep their fates at bay Their paths should have never crossed But now… Read more

It’s starting to become clear. The seemingly bewildering nature of the continued support of the Evangelical Right for the loony Trump administration is starting to make sense. They are hastening the End Times and spoiling for a fight. It doesn’t make it any less frightening, but at least I can understand it now. I didn’t jump right on the pile when the news broke about the Trump ordered assassination of General Soleimani. I remained silent for a few days because… Read more
