Forgive but Don’t Forget: Dr. Dre’s Abusive Past and Promising Transformation

Forgive but Don’t Forget: Dr. Dre’s Abusive Past and Promising Transformation October 29, 2015

The media loves to throw Dr. Dre into the limelight…and with him, his colorful past.   But the buzz created by the rising hit of his recent album “Compton,” his successful business dealings with Apple, and the hit film “Straight Out of Compton,” forced Dr. Dre to face old facts.

As the movie got traction, three women came forward to express their frustration at what they called a “revisionist history.” They claimed to he abused them.

Dr. Dre publicly apologized to the women he had hurt, in a recent interview with The New York Times:

“Twenty-five years ago I was a young man drinking too much and in over my head with no real structure in my life. However, none of this is an excuse for what I did. I’ve been married for 19 years and every day I’m working to be a better man for my family, seeking guidance along the way. I’m doing everything I can so I never resemble that man again.”

“I apologize to the women I’ve hurt. I deeply regret what I did and know that it has forever impacted all of our lives.”

Physical abuse of any kind is unacceptable and my heart goes out to the three victims.

But I also feel Dr. Dre handled this well.  I’ve had enough men lying to save their reputation.  (I won’t name names, but you know you who are.)  It is never fun when others shove old mistakes down your throat. (No matter how much progress you have made).

Dr. Dre handled this with humility. class, and truth.

He didn’t forget the hurt he caused. Instead he got better. He admitted his mistakes, apologized, and continually works hard to be the honorable man I know he is.

The mistakes he made 25 years ago, do not define him, his career, or his family. His transformation created a role model for so many men.

As a victim of physical abusive myself, it is never something I will forget—but with forgiveness comes healing and a better focus for the future.
