Things are certainly different this year, aren’t they? Every Christmas I’ve had a tradition of baking as many cookies as I can to bring to the Friendship Room‘s annual Christmas party. The volunteers at the Friendship Room have noticed that most charities, understandably, get their Christmas giving over with before the big day so that all the volunteers can have a day off with their families. This makes Christmas a very lonely day if you haven’t got a family: particularly... Read more

When I was a little girl, we had a very strange VHS tape we watched only at Christmas. It was a cartoon about a little orphan boy named Jeffery who ended up locked in a toy factory on Christmas eve before being adopted by a family that knew Santa. I can’t really tell you anything more about the plot because there wasn’t one. It was just random musical numbers designed to be sentimental and confusing. One musical number involved all... Read more

We need to talk about the COVID vaccine. The big news of the past week or so, is that we finally have a vaccine that promises to provide immunity to COVID-19 so that the whole world can get our lives back. Pfizer was the first drug company to get their vaccine approved, but others are close behind. This is monumental. It’s miraculous that scientists were able to develop the shots so quickly and I’m excited to see what the... Read more

Today I saw pigeons in flight for the very first time. Well, not exactly, but this is the first time I’ve really been able to see pigeons in flight. Let me start at the beginning. I am terribly nearsighted, but for the longest time I didn’t wear glasses at all. My family was not kind about my appearance.  I had a brother I love dearly who used to call me a “fat, clumsy oaf” on a daily basis and a... Read more

I didn’t watch the entire “Jericho March” that took place in Washington yesterday. I read the news and watched clips online and that was enough for me. I read about the March in more depth in, of all places, The American Conservative, where even Rod Dreher thought they’d gone a little too far. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but his live tweet of the spectacle was pretty good as well. Dreher doesn’t seem to understand that he’s been a contributor to... Read more

I just read an excellent article by Jennifer Vail at “Her View from Home;” the article is entitled “I Was the Angel on the Tree– This is What Our Family Really Needed.” It’s about a topic that my veteran readers know I love to harp on: people who “donate” bad food to poor people. Vail describes being the child of the poor single mother, and the excitement she felt being gifted a turkey and a box of canned food... Read more

It was a good day. Good as things can get in this year, I mean. We actually got some homeschooling done. Rosie is finally, finally turning a corner in learning to read. She has been a whole year delayed in reading. Now, she can read through the easiest chapter books, a little haltingly, and she can write in the answers in her phonics and English. She knows her multiplication tables up to Times Five. We’re learning about Salvation History... Read more

Brandon Bernard was pronounced dead at 9:27 PM. He was executed by lethal injection at Terre Haute prison by the federal government tonight. This in spite of an enormous outpouring of support throughout the country, with people from all political viewpoints and walks of life petitioning President Trump to spare his life. The Huffington Post reports: “The government went through with the killing despite high-profile opposition from 5 of 9 surviving jurors who sentenced Bernard to death, the prosecutor who defended... Read more

Today, on social media, I saw a short video that is a grim sign of the times. It shows a police car driving up to serve an eviction notice in Portland, and a gang of neighbors surrounding the car in their thick winter coats and bath robes. The neighbors actually start kicking the car’s bumper and eventually spraying a fire extinguisher at it before resorting to throwing things. The police car finally backs away in defeat. I’m sure it’ll be... Read more
